In the arid regions of Rajasthan, water in the restored stepwell Moosi Rani Sagar now remains at depths of up to nine meters even in the hottest months. Not long ago, the level dropped almost to the bottom, and the water was polluted. The restoration of 2021 years returned the structure, built about two hundred years ago, to its former role of collecting and preserving rainwater for the entire surrounding area.
Modern pipelines and deep wells, on which people relied for decades, are increasingly failing: groundwater is being depleted, and heavy rains, now common due to warming, simply run off the parched land without time to soak in. In response, hundreds of communities across the country have begun to clear and repair old systems — stepwells, cascade ponds, johads, and ahar-pynes. These structures worked for centuries without electricity or complex machinery, intercepting runoff and recharging underground aquifers.
Research shows that such cascade reservoirs are especially resilient to extreme weather events: they mitigate both droughts and sudden floods while also reducing soil erosion. Unlike large dams, they do not require huge maintenance costs and do not disrupt the natural water cycle in the landscape. It seems that it is the combination of simplicity and local adaptation that makes them valuable today, when the climate is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
Restoration is not only carried out by the state. In Alwar and other districts of Rajasthan, local residents and small non-profit organizations take the initiative. They clear silted channels, strengthen banks, and re-teach young people how to manage these systems. The result is noticeable within a few seasons: wells fill earlier, and surrounding fields receive water longer than usual.
Ancient Indian engineers, when creating these structures, relied on observations of natural flows and seasonal rhythms. Today, this approach is again relevant: instead of fighting water by trying to channel it through pipes, people learn to cooperate with it, giving it time to seep into the ground. As an old Indian saying goes, "water finds its way if not obstructed."
The revival of traditional methods does not negate modern technologies but complements them where large infrastructure solutions prove vulnerable. In conditions of growing rainfall instability and depletion of freshwater reserves, such hybrid approaches help preserve both water and cultural heritage simultaneously.
Turning to time-tested solutions reminds us that sustainable water management begins with respect for local conditions and ancestral knowledge.
