The fires began earlier than usual, as early as April, and lasted longer than at any time in the last two decades. More than 700 firefighters, 200 pieces of equipment, and 38 aircraft were deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, while Copernicus satellites helped map the hotspots in real time.
Notably, the heat and drought did not just intensify the fires but also altered the risk map itself. Four heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees turned forests into dry tinderboxes, and the wind fanned the flames to threatening proportions. Evacuations affected hundreds of thousands of people, including those near major cities like Madrid and Bordeaux. Nature seemed to offer a reminder: what was once considered a "southern problem" now affects everyone.
European lawmakers are discussing the expansion of the civil protection mechanism and increased funding for prevention. This is not just about firefighting, but about long-term preparation: early warning, forest restoration, and infrastructure adaptation.
