A plant, thought extinct for two centuries, rediscovered in Assam's hill crevices

In the deep crevices of the Jatinga hills, in a damp, shaded microcosm, botanists have discovered living proof of a miracle: a plant that scientists believed was lost nearly two centuries ago. The rare flowering plant Rungia mastersii has returned to the hands of science – in the only place on Earth where it is known. It was last seen in 1845 when the British botanist J.W. Masters collected the sole specimen on the banks of the Sundar River in Assam. Now, after 181 years of silence, this species reminds us how many lives remain unseen until someone looks in the right place.

The rediscovery occurred in the Jatinga hills of the Dima Hasao district (one of Assam's three mountainous regions, known for its rich botanical flora and rugged terrain). Researcher Kangkan Kumar Das and Professor Debjyoti Bhattacharya from Gauhati University discovered a population of the plant during field surveys in rock crevices near a stream, at altitudes ranging from 900 to 1250 meters above sea level.

The species is striking in its modesty and beauty. It is a low-growing shrub, 60 to 110 centimeters tall, belonging to the Acanthaceae family (genus Rungia). The flowers – pale green or whitish with delicate purple patterns – are barely noticeable, yet perfect in their subtlety. But the most astonishing fact is that only a single population, consisting of approximately forty individuals, is currently known. This means the entire global stock of the species can literally be counted on one's fingers.

The story of this plant partly reflects the story of the entire Rungia genus, which comprises 88 species distributed across tropical Africa, tropical and subtropical Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula. Four species of Rungia grow in Assam itself, but it was Rungia mastersii that was truly lost from the sight of botanists. The species existed only as a name on a yellowed herbarium sheet at the Botanical Survey of India – the sole evidence of its once-living presence in the world.

The 2026 discovery, officially published in the reputable international journal Feddes Repertorium (a leading publication in botanical taxonomy, published by Wiley VCH since 1905), has brought the species back into scientific circulation. However, it simultaneously highlighted its extreme vulnerability: its microscopic range and minimal population make the plant sensitive to any change.

The slightest fluctuation in stream flow, a landslide, accidental deforestation, or even a careless human step could lead to its extinction. The species has not yet received official conservation status from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but field observations strongly indicate the need for urgent protection measures. Researchers emphasize that immediate governmental intervention is required, including intensive monitoring and targeted conservation programs.

The rediscovery of Rungia mastersii is not just a botanical sensation. It is a lesson about the fragility of life and the fine line between "extinct" and "not yet found," which is thinner than it seems. In a world where attention is often drawn to spectacular animals or monumental landscapes, the humble inhabitants of rock crevices remain invisible until someone looks precisely there. That is why such finds are so rare and so valuable – they show that with careful searching, the earth can return to us what we believed was lost forever.
