In the mountains of western Colombia, where misty cloud forests hide botanical treasures, the Mesenia-Paramillo reserve has presented science with a long-awaited gift. Here, on the steep slopes of the Cordillera Occidental, at altitudes where constant humidity creates ideal conditions for rare plants, botanists have described two new species of the genus Besleria from the family Gesneriaceae. The discovery, published on 31 August 2026 in the journal PhytoKeys, shows how little we know even about well-protected corners of the planet—and how critical the role of regular field expeditions is.
The Mesenia-Paramillo reserve stretches across three Colombian departments: Antioquia, Caldas, and Risaralda. Its waterlogged cloud forests create a microclimate unique to Andean biota. It is here, on these humid slopes, that two species were discovered: Besleria purpureovenosa, distinguished by prominent purple veins on the leaves, and Besleria roseocalyx, notable for its pinkish calyx contrasting with a yellow corolla. Both species are endemic to the region, their range limited to this reserve alone. The species descriptions were made by J. L. Clark and his colleagues based on field observations and morphological analysis.
The genus Besleria is one of the largest and least studied genera of the American flora. Currently, 176 species are known, most of which inhabit Neotropical forests. Their main concentration is in the tropical Andes, where more than a hundred species are found; the rest are distributed in Central America and the Caribbean region. Many Besleria species are small shrubs or herbs with bright flowers that attract hummingbirds and pollinating insects. The new species differ from their closest relatives in flower shape and color, leaf structure details, and inflorescence architecture—these differences reflect the plants' adaptation to the specific conditions of Andean cloud forests.
Protected areas, it would seem, are fully shielded from external threats. But in reality, they are living laboratories where evolution continues to experiment. Each new species description is not just a catalog entry but evidence that even within reserves, entire ecosystems are hidden, existing on the edge between the known and the unknown, dependent on a fragile balance of humidity, light, and soil. The loss of such a territory could lead to the extinction of species whose existence science has not yet had time to learn about—and the loss would be irreparable.
The discovery was made possible thanks to systematic field expeditions and collaboration with local conservation organizations. Without the constant presence of researchers in the field, these plants would have remained 'invisible' to science. This is especially important in the Andes, where high biodiversity—Colombia ranks third in the world after Brazil and Indonesia—combines with the growing vulnerability of ecosystems to climate change and human economic activity. Here, there are more than 130 000 plant species, 1815 bird species, and 583 amphibian species.
Preserving such reserves is not romanticism of nature protection but a strategic investment in the future. It means leaving space for discoveries that lie ahead, and for the plants themselves, which continue to live by their own evolutionary rules, indifferent to whether we know of their existence.
