In August 2026, construction was completed in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on a unique structure: an ecological crossing over the Pinglu Canal. The bridge, 240 meters long and 20 meters wide, is the country's first specialized structure designed exclusively for the safe passage of wild animals across an artificial waterway.
The crossing spans a vital transport corridor connecting the Xijiang River to the Beibu Gulf. Its primary purpose is to preserve migration and foraging routes for local species, such as small Indian civets, leopard cats, and red-bellied squirrels. Instead of asphalt, the surface is covered with a layer of soil and vegetation, and fruit trees have been planted to attract animals and create the illusion of a natural forest corridor.
The project demonstrates how major infrastructure projects can account for the needs of wildlife. The canal is designed to accommodate vessels with a cargo capacity of up to 5000 tons, yet engineers incorporated two special wildlife crossings into its design. The total cost of these solutions was approximately 100 million yuan, highlighting the priority placed on ecological balance in modern construction.
Such measures are particularly relevant in regions with high population density and intensive transport development. Animals inhabiting coastal forests and hills will now be able to cross the canal without the risk of colliding with machinery or losing their habitual routes. According to project data, the bridge is already ready for use and will be monitored by specialists.
Building such structures helps mitigate the consequences of habitat fragmentation that occurs when roads and canals are laid. In Guangxi, this solution has become part of a broader strategy for biodiversity conservation in the context of a growing economy.
