In the Taihang Mountains, North Chinese leopards are gradually returning to their familiar trails, and local residents no longer see them merely as a threat to livestock. Behind this lies not just protection, but a well-thought-out system where the interests of wildlife and humans intertwine into a single mechanism.
The organization "Cat Alliance" together with the authorities of Heshun County in Shanxi Province launched the project "Leopard Village Fields". Instead of conventional crops, they are developing eco-friendly agriculture here, which reduces losses from predator attacks and simultaneously creates conditions for restoring the natural prey base.
At the same time, special ecological corridors are being built during road construction. These passages allow leopards and other animals to move freely between forest areas without crossing dangerous roads. Years of forest restoration and regular patrolling are yielding noticeable results: the number of North Chinese leopards in the region is growing.
Coordination between the provinces of Beijing, Hebei, and Shanxi enhances the effect. Leopards are already beginning to disperse along the Taihang mountain range, exploring new territories. This approach shows that the conflict between humans and large predators can be resolved not only through prohibitions but also through joint actions.
Data from patrols and camera traps confirm: the population is stabilizing, and attacks on livestock are being kept under control. Residents participate in monitoring and receive support through ecological initiatives, which changes their attitude towards living alongside wild cats.
The experience of Heshun demonstrates how local measures to restore the ecosystem and reduce conflicts can work at the level of an entire region.
