In the mountains of Shanxi Province, an infrared camera recorded a female North China leopard with a noticeably rounded belly. The footage from the nature reserve in Heshun County has become yet another confirmation: the rare predator is not merely surviving, but beginning to recover in numbers.
Staff of the local ecological society regularly check around three hundred cameras installed on animal trails and near watering holes. In recent months, they have managed to capture not only the pregnant female, but also pairs of leopards, claw marks on trees with which the animals mark their territory, and even a curious animal that came right up to the lens. These images make it possible to track the predators' individual home ranges and habits.
According to data as of the end of 2025, 63 adults and 26 cubs were counted in the county and its surroundings. Specialists note that a stable breeding group has formed. In autumn, when the pregnant female is due to give birth to cubs, monitoring will continue in order to understand how successfully reproduction is proceeding.
The North China leopard is one of the rarest subspecies. Until recently, it was considered on the brink of extinction because of forest fragmentation and poaching. Today the cameras show that protected areas and systematic counting are producing results: the animals are returning to their former ranges and breeding successfully.
Such observations are important not only for science. They remind us that even in densely populated regions it is possible to preserve space for large predators, if people deliberately limit their interference and monitor the state of the ecosystem.
When a camera captures a pregnant female, it is not just a lucky shot — it is a signal that nature is capable of recovering, if only it is given a chance.
