Central Bank Tightens Crypto Market: Russians Limited to Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT-1

By June 2026, Russian retail investors will face an unprecedented situation: trading will be restricted to just three crypto assets. The Central Bank appears set to limit the legal market to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the USDT stablecoin. All other coins, including those already held in the portfolios of thousands of people, will fall outside the permitted scope.

Officially, the measure is framed as a safeguard for non-professional market participants. In practice, however, it fundamentally alters the nature of crypto investment within the country. Instead of a broad range of assets, investors are left with a narrow corridor where price and liquidity are shaped more by the regulator's decisions than by global demand.

Behind these restrictions lies the familiar logic of capital controls. Amid ongoing restrictions on moving funds abroad, cryptocurrency remains one of the few ways to keep savings in a relatively independent form. By narrowing this channel to just three instruments, the state is effectively dictating how citizens may protect their money against inflation and geopolitical risks.

For the average investor, the consequences will be very tangible. Portfolio diversification will diminish, while dependence on the volatility of these specific three assets will increase. Those who previously held smaller-cap coins or other stablecoins will now be forced to either realize their losses or seek workarounds, risking legal repercussions.

Interestingly, the mere existence of three approved assets does not make the market any safer. Bitcoin and Ethereum remain subject to sharp fluctuations, while USDT carries its own issuer risks. Consequently, the regulator is not so much reducing risks as concentrating them in pre-selected areas.

Ultimately, anyone planning to keep part of their savings in cryptocurrency must now answer a simple question: are they prepared to build a strategy when their choice of assets is dictated by administrative decree rather than the market.
