It was developed in Kunming during the 1950s by crossing German Shepherds with local dogs and wolf-hybrids to serve the needs of the military and police. Today, these intelligent and resilient canines work in narcotics and explosives detection, perform rescue functions, and serve as loyal family companions for those who can provide the high levels of activity they require.
The Xiasi, or Xia-se, appeared sometime between 202 BC and 1080 AD, according to various historical records. These agile, wire-haired hunting dogs are currently threatened with extinction due to low genetic diversity.
