President Trump Delivers Speech on Election Integrity, Announces Declassification of Documents-1

On Thursday, July 16, 2026, President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the East Room of the White House in a 25-minute live broadcast. The speech focused on two central themes: election security and the announcement of the immediate declassification of intelligence documents that, according to the president, expose critical vulnerabilities in the American electoral system.

The main focus of the speech was accusations against China. Trump alleged that Beijing committed what he called the largest electoral data theft in history, acquiring approximately 220 million voter registration files from American voters over several years, starting in 2020. According to the president, the stolen data included names, addresses, phone numbers, and information on voters' political preferences—information that he claimed could be used for various purposes, including illegal voter registration. Trump also stated that Chinese intelligence had created a special task force dedicated to exploiting this stolen data.

According to Trump's assertions, critical information about these incidents had been hidden from the American people and even from the president himself during his first term for many years. He emphasized that the current electoral system puts the country at risk of cyberattacks and foreign interference, describing its condition as catastrophically vulnerable.

The documents declassified that evening were prepared by the so-called White House Working Group on Government Transparency, with the support of presidential advisors and intelligence agency heads.

According to a previous intelligence report from March 2021, analysts determined that "we have no indications that any foreign entity attempted to interfere with the technical aspect of the voting process in the 2020 election." Election security experts had also previously insisted that the American electoral system possessed multi-layered defenses.

The speech was delivered in the context of the upcoming 2026 midterm elections and Trump's active campaign for the passage of the Election Security Act (SAVE America Act). This bill, which passed the House of Representatives in February 2026, requires voters to provide proof of citizenship when registering and present identification when voting. Supporters of the bill argue that it strengthens election security, while critics point out that instances of non-citizen voting are extremely rare and that the law could create barriers for legal voters.

The broadcast of the speech became a subject of internal debate among television networks. ABC and NBC chose to broadcast the speech only on their streaming platforms (ABC News Live and NBC News NOW), declining to provide airtime on their main channels.

CBS initially began broadcasting the speech but cut off the broadcast several minutes before its conclusion. CNN also decided not to air the speech live but provided access on its website and app. According to Deadline, this decision by the networks was due to the need for active fact-checking in light of the president's history of unsubstantiated claims about the 2020 election.

Trump called for the television channels that refused to broadcast the speech to lose their broadcasting licenses and accused the intelligence community of withholding information. He demanded the urgent passage of the Election Security Act by Congress. His claims about Chinese interference and the vulnerabilities of the electoral system drew immediate criticism from both Democratic leaders and state election officials.

Twenty-four Democratic governors, in a joint statement, characterized the speech as an attempt to "intimidate and silence voters," stating that the country's elections had repeatedly proven to be secure and impartial.
