On September 9, Apple officially unveiled iPhone Duo — the first foldable iPhone in the company's history. The gadget unfolds like a small book, transforming from a smartphone with an external screen of 5,4 inches into a device with an internal display measuring 7,6 inches diagonally.
Inside is a processor A20 Pro, two batteries, a titanium body and a special screen coating that makes the crease almost invisible. Two colors are available: star white and night sky. But the public immediately recognized the price as the main technical achievement: it's visible even from the other end of a bank account.
In the US, the base iPhone Duo with 256 GB costs from 1999 dollars, which makes the Duo the most expensive iPhone in the company's history.
The internet reacted instantly. Users joke that two screens are needed above all for financial planning: on one you can admire your new phone, and on the other you can keep an eye on the monthly payments.
Other options for useful multitasking have appeared as well. For example, on the first half of the screen, open a bank account before the purchase, and on the second — after. Or simultaneously watch the Apple presentation and search for listings selling unnecessary furniture.
Competitors did not stay on the sidelines either. Samsung, which has been making foldable smartphones for several generations already, accused Apple of "reheating yesterday's leftovers." The company also joked that the name Duo suspiciously resembles Duolingo.
The language service immediately joined the spat: An iPhone Duo costs 1999 dollars, while Duo in your iPhone is free. This is perhaps the first case where the green owl looks more economically advantageous than a new smartphone.
People are also joking about the folding design itself. Users suggest folding the Duo not once, but several times — until it turns into a device that fits not only in a pocket, but also in a family budget.
Apple assures us that the closed smartphone is convenient to hold with one hand. The internet agrees: with the other hand, you can be signing a loan agreement at that very moment.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo will open on 16 October, and sales will begin on 23 October. Until then, potential buyers will have to decide whether they really need two screens — or whether one is enough to see the price and quietly close the page.
Apple has created a phone that folds in half. The internet added double expenses, a long receipt and a surprisingly spacious wallet — because after the purchase there will be nothing left in it. 😄
