Keratin from Sheep Wool: A New Path to Bone Regeneration

In August 2026, researchers from King's College London unveiled findings that could revolutionize approaches to repairing damaged bones. According to a report on the Al Arabiya website, keratin extracted from sheep's wool demonstrated an ability to support the formation of new bone tissue in animal experiments.

Within several weeks of implantation, the keratin membranes guided the growth of new bone in the damaged areas. Sherif Elsharkawy, a Bachelor of Medicine from King's College London, noted that this marks the first successful test of a wool-based material for bone regeneration in a living organism.

Utilizing keratin could reduce reliance on collagen, which, despite its "gold standard" status, has limitations in terms of strength and degradation rate.

According to the researchers, these findings open up prospects for creating new biomaterials in regenerative medicine and dentistry. The keratin-based material is positioned as a potential alternative, capable of competing with collagen in the long term.
