Humpback whales have a habit that has puzzled people for many years.
On September 6, a new research story was published in Australia.
Tour operators had long observed a strange sight: a huge whale flips onto its back and sticks its tail out of the water. The behavior looked so incomprehensible that it began to be seriously studied.
The enormous animal suddenly flips onto its back, lowers its head underwater, and leaves its tail sticking above the surface. From the outside, it looks roughly as if a multi-ton whale decided to master a headstand.
Tour operators near Australia's Whitsunday Islands began regularly noticing such behavior many years ago. They reported the strange whales to researchers, but even specialists initially could not confidently explain what was happening.
It turned out the whales were not entertaining tourists at all.
This behavior is linked to breeding, and a multitude of observations led scientists to a much larger discovery: the waters of the Great Barrier Reef turned out to be one of the most important places where humpback whales give birth and raise newborn calves.
In fact, researchers discovered a vast natural "whale maternity ward".
For mothers, conditions here are almost ideal: warm, relatively shallow, and protected water. Scientists conducted aerial observations, studied water temperature, seafloor topography, and tracked whale movements.
And gradually the strange picture came together.
It turns out people spent years looking at whales upside down and thinking:
"What on earth are they doing?"
Meanwhile, the whales could probably answer:
"Actually, we're having some family matters here." π
The most beautiful part of this story is that a major scientific discovery began with someone once looking at a tail sticking out of the ocean and deciding: "No, we really need to find out what that is."
