Young Octopuses Hold 'Fight Club' on Reefs and Slap Annoying Fish

Unexpected marine skirmishes are unfolding in the shallow waters off Brazil's northeastern coast and around its oceanic islands. Young Brazilian reef octopuses (Octopus insularis) are not merely hiding among the corals; instead, they are actively responding to their neighbors by slapping with their tentacles at fish that venture too close to their territory.

A new study published in the journal Behavioural Processes reveals that scientists analyzed 101 interactions between young octopuses and ten species of reef fish. It was discovered that this aggression is not random, suggesting a deliberate behavior.

Octopuses distinguish between territorial fish, such as certain damselfish or surgeonfish, which themselves "poke" and "flick" their fins while defending their space. In response, the octopuses display a distinctive "half-spotted" pattern on their bodies and deliver swift tentacle strikes.

Previously, such "slaps" were thought to be merely a way to ward off anything interfering with hunting. However, new observations reveal a more complex picture: the octopuses' behavior depends on the fish species and the context.

Territorial neighbors provoke a defensive reaction, whereas "following" fish, which simply swim alongside in search of prey, often remain unpunished. This suggests a sophisticated system of signals and responses within the reef ecosystem, indicating a nuanced interaction.

These interactions resemble how neighbors in a human city resolve disputes over parking or property lines – except here, instead of words and gestures, color signals and tentacle strikes are used. Even inexperienced young octopuses are already mastering these rules, suggesting innate adaptive mechanisms within the complex reef environment.

The study highlights the fragility of reef communities, emphasizing that any disruption to their balance, whether from rising water temperatures or pollution, could alter these delicate interspecies relationships. Understanding such details helps us better appreciate the intricate interconnectedness of ocean life. Observing young octopuses offers a glimpse into a world where even tiny creatures engage in complex social games, reminding us that protecting reefs means not only saving corals but also preserving entire networks of behavior and interaction.
