Tons of Ice and Fruit Ice Cream: How the Prague Zoo is Saving Animals from the Heat

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

The Prague Zoo has found a striking and simultaneously beneficial way to help its inhabitants survive another wave of European heat. Several tons of ice have been delivered to the enclosures, creating real cool oases for the animals amidst the scorching summer day.

The 16-year-old polar bear twins, Aleut and Gregor, were most delighted by the icy gift. Upon encountering a huge pile of ice cubes, they immediately began rolling on it, burying themselves in the cold "snowdrift," and playing. According to zoo employees, the ice not only cools the bears but also serves as entertainment, making their daily lives more varied.

The unusual initiative took place on July 30, when the air temperature in Prague was expected to rise to approximately 38 degrees Celsius. Due to increasingly frequent periods of extreme heat, the zoo began ordering ice for the animals two years ago. Initially, it was planned to be delivered only in July and August; however, the weather is becoming less predictable, so cooling will be prepared in advance in the future.

The ice slides are not just for polar bears. In various years, otters, elephants, and parrots have also received ice. Gorillas were given a kind of fruit ice cream – pieces of fresh fruit frozen inside ice. Such a treat simultaneously helps them cool down, quench their thirst, and engage the animals in an interesting task.

For other inhabitants, shaded areas, cool indoor spaces, and pools are provided. Staff carefully monitor the animals' behavior, as different species tolerate high temperatures differently: some are accustomed to hot climates, while others require additional protective measures.

Aleut and Gregor, happily tumbling in the improvised ice drift, became the symbols of this summer story. Their reaction showed that even a simple solution can simultaneously support the animals' health and bring them genuine pleasure.

Against the backdrop of reports about abnormal heat, this story has become a small but very heartwarming reminder: care sometimes looks like several tons of ordinary ice, delivered on time to those who need coolness most.
