Nutcracker appears in the forests of Juur, Inner Mongolia

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In mid-October, an unusual visitor was spotted in the administrative courtyard of the Juur Forestry Enterprise in Inner Mongolia — a nutcracker, a bird belonging to the nationally protected "three benefits" species. The bird moved freely among the trees and grass, showing no fear of people, and thereby drew the attention of the staff.

The nutcracker is a permanent resident of the Greater Khingan taiga. Adults reach 30–38 cm in length and weigh 130–200 g. Its plumage is brownish-bay with characteristic white star-shaped spots, thanks to which the bird is easily recognized. Its main food is conifer seeds, primarily cedar and pine. The bird stores them for the winter by burying them in the ground, and thereby unwittingly contributes to the natural regeneration of the forest.

Previously, nutcrackers preferred to stay in remote areas of the taiga and rarely approached places of active economic activity. The appearance of the bird near the forestry office indicates a gradual improvement in habitat conditions: reduced disturbance, preservation of the food base and restoration of natural vegetation.

The enterprise's staff did not approach or disturb the bird, limiting themselves to observation from a safe distance. Such an approach complies with current wildlife protection rules and allows animals to maintain their natural behavior.

Throughout the year, the Juur forestry district conducts regular patrols, removes litter, installs information boards and carries out educational work among visitors. In addition, it has already provided assistance to injured birds — Ural owls, swans and ducks — and released them back into the wild after rehabilitation.

The appearance of the nutcracker in a settled place is a reminder that even small changes in man's attitude toward the forest can bring back those who help it to regenerate.
