Twenty years of painstaking tracking of black rhinos in South African reserves have turned ordinary management records into a veritable treasure trove of scientific discoveries. The World Wildlife Fund's black rhino range expansion project, launched in 2003 as a pilot attempt to increase the species' numbers, now provides answers to questions that were previously only addressed by hearsay.
Black rhinos have traditionally been considered solitary, but analysis of nearly seventy thousand encounters of 542 individuals has shown that social contacts play an important role in their lives. This is especially noticeable in young animals—subadults. Those who interacted more with conspecifics in their youth were less likely to become victims of aggressive encounters in adulthood.
A separate study focused on the birth of calves. Females exhibit characteristic changes in movement before and after giving birth. Using GPS collar data, scientists can now more accurately determine birth dates and select suitable calving sites, taking into account vegetation type and predator density.
Previously, reserve managers relied on rare visual sightings of newborns and often erred by months. Now, female movement allows the moment of birth to be recorded remotely, without risk to animals and observers.
These findings directly impact rhino translocation practices. When selecting individuals for transport, it is important to consider not only population numbers but also individual social habits. Ignoring this factor increases the risk of fatal conflicts in new locations.
According to project coordinator Ursina Rusch, decisions used to be made based on fragmentary observations. Today, a vast amount of data allows for informed, scientifically backed measures that help populations remain healthy and grow.
Long-term monitoring has shown that even seemingly solitary animals depend on subtle social bonds. Accounting for these bonds in reserve management reduces mortality and increases the species' chances of survival under constant pressure from poaching and habitat loss.
Thus, twenty years of records collected for everyday management become the key to a more precise and humane conservation strategy for black rhinos.
