Bumblebees with Tiny Brains Solved a Chimpanzee-Level Problem
Scientists have once again been surprised by bumblebees. In an experiment, the results of which were published in the prestigious journal Science in June 2026, buff-tailed bumblebees (*Bombus terrestris*) spontaneously solved a completely novel object-manipulation task. No one taught them how to do this. They simply… figured it out.
A Classic Problem — Miniaturized
Imagine a blue artificial flower, containing a sugary reward, suspended from the ceiling of a transparent arena. It was unreachable from the ground or by flying, with the height deliberately set. Nearby lay a lightweight foam ball.
To get the treat, the bumblebee had to independently figure out how to roll the ball under the flower and climb onto it. This is an insect version of the famous “box and banana” problem, which Wolfgang Köhler's chimpanzees once solved.
Bumblebees were only pre-familiarized with two separate facts:
- blue flower = reward;
- the ball can be moved and is safe.
However, no one demonstrated the combination of these pieces of knowledge—the solution to the problem—to them.
What the Results Showed
In the group that knew about both the flower and the ball, 16 out of 22 bumblebees (approximately 75%) successfully completed the task. In control groups, where one or both elements were absent, success rates dropped sharply.
Even when the flower was completely hidden from view while the ball was being moved, many bumblebees still rolled it precisely to the correct spot. This indicates goal-directed behavior, not randomness or a simple reaction to what was visually present.
Why This Is Impressive
A bumblebee's brain weighs less than a milligram. For a long time, it was believed that spontaneously solving new problems using objects as tools was exclusive to animals with large brains, such as primates, elephants, and certain birds. Now it is clear that such a level of cognitive flexibility is also possible in insects.
Researchers emphasize that the bumblebees were completely “naive.” They had no prior experience resembling the required solution. They simply combined two previously acquired pieces of knowledge into an entirely new strategy.
“This is essentially an insect version of the classic ‘box and banana’ task. An animal needs to understand that an object can be moved and used as a tool to reach an inaccessible target,” states Olli Loukola from the University of Oulu, the study's senior author.
What This Changes
This discovery does not imply that bumblebees possess human-like thinking or consciousness. However, it significantly expands the boundaries of our understanding regarding how “complex” a brain is required for flexible, goal-oriented problem-solving.
Bumblebees have previously astonished scientists: they play with balls, count, recognize faces, sense rhythm, and even learn complex skills from their peers. The new research adds another compelling chapter to the story that intelligence is not solely about brain size.
Small, fuzzy, and unexpectedly clever. Bumblebees have once again proven that nature knows how to surprise us.
