In Japan, they held an unusual holiday called Jimi Halloween, whose participants dress up not as monsters but as the most ordinary people.-1

While the whole world competes in the scariest, most expensive and most incredible costumes for Halloween, the Japanese decided to take a completely different path. 😂

They came up with a holiday where the winner is not the scariest person, but the most ordinary one!

This unusual event is called Jimi Halloween, or “Boring Halloween.”

And its participants really do try to look as boring as possible!

Here you won't meet Dracula, Frankenstein or a zombie. Instead, you can see an office worker who is tired of life, a person getting ready to go to bed, or a store employee politely spraying air freshener after customers.

And the most amazing thing is that these are all real costumes!

The more boring, the funnier!

The unusual holiday is organized by the Japanese online publication Daily Portal Z. In 2026, it was again held in the Shibuya district of Tokyo.

The main rule is simple: you need to portray not a celebrity or a fantasy character, but a completely ordinary life situation.

Moreover, the more precise and absurd the chosen moment, the better.

For example, one participant dressed up as a person who admires the design of a water tap so much that he can't bring himself to turn on the water.

She brought along a model of a sink and demonstrated to those around her the agonizing process of making a decision.

Another participant decided to show the balance between work and personal life.

To do this, she wore half a strict business suit and half a cozy cardigan.

The result was a person who, with one half of her body, is already at a meeting, while with the other, she has long been lying at home on the couch!

Another participant came in striped pajamas and with a toothbrush.

His costume was simply called: “The person who is about to go to bed”.

Admit it, it's genius!

No complicated sets, makeup, or expensive accessories.

The main thing is to brush your teeth on time! 😂

And how about artificial intelligence in the form of food?

Among the participants there was also a person portraying “mapo tofu created by artificial intelligence”.

For this he needed an image of a Chinese dish, which he placed on his head.

Another participant dressed up as a person doing everything possible to avoid sunlight hitting their skin: a wide-brimmed hat, glasses, a covered face, and long gloves.

And there was also a participant in the image of a food delivery service worker from before Uber Eats existed.

And even a person who, on a plane, politely asks the neighbor behind them: “May I recline my seat?”

Now that's a truly scary character! Especially if you're sitting behind him with a cup of hot coffee! 🤣

A holiday you don't need to prepare for at all

The most wonderful feature of Jimi Halloween is that almost anyone can take part in it completely for free.

You can come with bags from the supermarket and call the costume “The person who forgot to take a cart.”

You can put on house slippers and declare yourself “The worker who doesn't feel like leaving the house today.”

Or you can do nothing at all.

Just sit down on a chair with your phone.

And say that your costume is called “The person who has been getting ready to start working for three hours now.”

The main thing is for those around you to recognize the situation!

That is precisely where the charm of this Japanese holiday lies: the funniest things are sometimes hidden not in fantastical stories, but in utterly ordinary everyday life.

All in all, the Japanese have invented the perfect Halloween for everyone who can't be bothered to come up with a costume!

Now all that's left is to organize an international championship.

We would suggest three foolproof looks:

  • “The person who came into the kitchen and forgot why.”
  • “The person who is looking for their phone while holding it in their hand.”
  • “The person who promised to go to bed at ten but has been watching videos for three hours already.”

And the best part is that you won't even have to change clothes to take part! 😂
