Canada ends England's 41-match streak: the end of an era of dominance

In Toronto, before a record North American audience of 18 621 spectators, the Canadians snatched victory from England with a score of 24:21. Shoshana Seumanutafa scored the decisive try three minutes before the end of the match — and with that goal the "Red Roses'" unbeaten run, which had lasted 41 matches, came to an end.

Just a month earlier in Exeter, the Canadians had already halted the Englishwomen's winning streak, drawing 26:26. Now they achieved a full defeat — England's first since the World Cup final of 2022. A team that had not known defeat in 72 matches since then suddenly found itself vulnerable.

Canada led on tries but lagged in conversions and physical battles in the first half. England took advantage of their opponents' sendings-off and went ahead 14:5. However, in the second half the Canadians equalised and then went ahead thanks to perseverance and precise attacking play.

The victory was made possible not only by individual bright moments but also by systematic work: the Canadians learned to withstand pressure and exploit the slightest mistakes of the favourites. Home support and record attendance amplified this effect — rugby in North America is gaining new momentum.

For England this is a signal: even the longest streak does not guarantee eternal superiority. John Mitchell's team must now find answers to questions about motivation and tactical flexibility before the next match in Ottawa.

Canada, meanwhile, proved that perseverance and belief in one's own strength can overturn any scenario. This result changes the balance of power in world women's rugby and opens the door to new ambitions.
