Wimbledon 2026: A New Champion, Falling Favorites, and Sinner’s Showdown with Zverev-1

Wimbledon 2026 has reached its final day. As of the morning of July 12, the women's champion has already been crowned, while the men's tournament's main intrigue will be settled today on Centre Court. This year's edition has been marked by sensational upsets of top seeds, a historic run by a British player, and a dominant showing by the Czech women's contingent.

Linda Noskova: The New Queen of Wimbledon

The tournament's breakout star was 21-year-old Czech player Linda Noskova. In the women's final, she defeated her compatriot Karolina Muchova:

6:2, 5:7, 6:3

The match nearly turned into a painful drama for Noskova. After winning the first set and leading 5:2 in the second, she held five championship points but failed to convert any of them. Muchova staged an incredible comeback to force a deciding set.

During the break, Noskova caught sight of the championship trophy near the exit to Centre Court and, in her own words, managed to regain her focus for the fight ahead. She reclaimed control of the match in the third set, ultimately clinching victory on her sixth championship point. This marks the first Grand Slam title of her career.

This final made history as the first-ever Grand Slam singles championship match contested by two Czech women. Noskova also becomes the third Czech winner at Wimbledon in the last four years, following in the footsteps of Marketa Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova.

The trophy ceremony was a particularly emotional affair. Noskova dedicated her victory to her mother, who passed away in 2024. The championship dish was presented to her by Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Women's draw sees almost all favorites fall

Noskova’s triumph was the culmination of one of the most unpredictable women's tournaments in recent memory. Defending champion Iga Swiatek failed to retain her crown, while world number one Aryna Sabalenka was ousted by Naomi Osaka as early as the fourth round.

This result marked Osaka’s best performance at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals for the first time before eventually falling to Muchova. In addition to Swiatek and Sabalenka, second seed Elena Rybakina also failed to reach the tournament's closing stages.

Ultimately, a women's draw that began with a field of established champions concluded with an all-Czech final.

Today: Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Zverev

The highlight of the final day is the men's final between defending champion Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

The match is scheduled to start no earlier than 4:00 PM London time, which is approximately 6:00 PM in Kyiv. (Wimbledon)

Sinner halts Djokovic

In the semifinals, the Italian secured a convincing victory over seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic:

6:4, 6:4, 6:4

Sinner fired 16 aces, didn't commit a single double fault, and never gave his opponent a look at a break point. For the 39-year-old Djokovic, the loss meant that his dream of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title has been deferred once again.

After the match, the Serb admitted to feeling a step slower than usual. His grueling five-set quarterfinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime may have taken its toll. Despite this, Djokovic expressed his hope to return to Wimbledon next year.

Zverev ends the British fairytale

In the other semifinal, Alexander Zverev put a stop to the sensational run of Briton Arthur Fery:

7:6, 6:2, 6:4

Having entered the main draw as a wildcard, Fery became only the second such player in the history of the Wimbledon men’s singles to reach the semifinals. His path to becoming a local favorite included victories over Grigor Dimitrov and Flavio Cobolli. (Wimbledon)

For Zverev, today’s match marks his first appearance in a Wimbledon final. The German had never previously progressed beyond the quarterfinals at the All England Club. Following his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year, he has now reached his second consecutive major final.

Who is the favorite?

Most signs point toward a victory for Sinner. The Italian is the defending champion, is coming off a masterclass in the semifinals, and has won his last nine head-to-head encounters against Zverev. After a tricky opening match, he has not dropped a single set to his opponents.

However, Zverev enters the final arguably playing with more confidence than ever before. Winning in Paris has lifted the years of pressure that came with his search for a first Grand Slam title. His massive serve is particularly dangerous on grass, so much will depend on whether the German can consistently handle the pace of Sinner’s relentless baseline rallies.

One of the tournament's major disappointments was the absence of Carlos Alcaraz. The two-time Wimbledon champion was forced to withdraw due to a wrist injury sustained earlier this spring.

Other champions

In the men’s doubles, Finland’s Harri Heliövaara and Britain’s Henry Patten emerged victorious. They defeated Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in the final:

7:6, 7:6

This is a second Wimbledon title for Patten. He is the first British player in the Open Era to win the men’s doubles title twice. (Wikipedia)

Ahead of the final match, Wimbledon 2026 has already delivered a new champion, a historic all-Czech final, and an unexpected British hero. Only the primary question remains: Will Sinner successfully defend his title, or will Zverev cap off the best month of his career with a second consecutive Grand Slam victory?
