A star is approaching the end of its life.
In its core, the former equilibrium can no longer be maintained. The vast structure contracts, and then an explosion occurs with such force that space is filled with light, energy, and the matter the star had been creating over millions of years.
It seems we are witnessing a grand finale.
But in the Universe, the end of one form often becomes the beginning of many others. The ejected elements become part of new clouds of gas and dust, of future stars, planets — and, perhaps, someday of living beings.
It is precisely this cosmic process that the creators of the project Cosmic Rhapsody attempted to translate into the language of music. Not as a tragedy of disappearance, but as a moment of great transformation: the star scatters across the Universe like festive confetti, continuing itself in new worlds.
A story that began with imagination
In September 2026, people began talking about Cosmic Rhapsody again — thanks to an unexpected encounter between an artistic image and modern astrophysics.
It is important to establish the chronology right away. This is not the premiere of a new work: the main recording of the project took place at London's Abbey Road studio back in November–December 2021, and the world premiere of the symphonic version took place on 5 May 2025 at the Barbican Centre in London.
A fresh news hook emerged on 16–17 September 2026, when new materials appeared about the scientific resonance between the climax of the work and the objectives of the COSI space telescope.
The project was created by surgeon and author Susan Lim and lawyer, writer, and songwriter Christina Teenz Tan. The chief composer, orchestrator, and arranger was French musician Manu Martin.
The recording featured the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Voices, City of London Voices, an international team of performers, and French pianist Jean‑Yves Thibaudet.
Cosmic Rhapsody unites symphonic music, songs, and animation into a single narrative. Its protagonists — a human and an artificial intelligence — set off on a cosmic journey, seeking answers to Earth's ecological crisis.
But at the heart of this grand story lies a deeper question: can a person hear the processes of the Universe not only as scientific data, but also as a personal experience?
A Star Among the Cosmic Clouds
Indian singer and composer Joi Barua wrote the melodies for two important songs of the project — Star Among the Cosmic Clouds and Confetti Storm. Later, together with Manu Martin, he also worked on the composition Confetti Star-Ion.
Susan Lim's lyrics describe a dying star that explodes and returns its matter to the cosmos. Joi Barua heard in this not only destruction.
In his musical reading, the supernova becomes an expansion. The star seems to release what it has accumulated, so that the elements created within it can enter into new compounds and new forms.
And so the music does not mourn its disappearance. It sounds solemn — like a passage across a threshold, after which one life becomes material for countless others to follow.
The visual line of this transformation was created by artist and director Samudra Kajal Saikia. He translated musical movements into streams of color, light, and stardust.
Thus one cosmic process received two artistic manifestations: the composer heard it as a melody, and the artist saw it as a movement of light.
When Art Met Astrophysics
Music Cosmic Rhapsody was not created from NASA data and is not a sonification of signals from space. This is an important distinction.
Sonification translates real scientific data — for example, the brightness, energy, or position of an object — into parameters of sound. Here everything happened differently: first came artistic images, music, and plot. And only later did their creators discover how closely they had come to the questions that a real cosmic mission investigates.
During a visit to the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, the project team became acquainted with the work on the telescope COSI — Compton Spectrometer and Imager.
COSI is designed to observe soft gamma radiation. Among its scientific tasks is the study of the origin of chemical elements and the processes that occur during stellar explosions.
Elements such as iron and aluminum arise in stellar interiors and during the most powerful cosmic events. After a star explodes, they scatter into space, become part of interstellar clouds, and become material for the next generations of celestial bodies.
The creators of Cosmic Rhapsody realized: the climax of their story and the future observations of COSI are directed toward one and the same process, but approach it from different sides.
Science asks: where and in what manner are elements born and distributed?
Music asks: what does the transformation of one form of existence into another mean for us?
This is not an officially commissioned NASA soundtrack and not the result of a joint scientific study. It is more accurate to speak of an encounter between an artistic project and a scientific mission, in which each side reveals one cosmic story in its own way.
We really are made of stellar matter
The poetic image of stardust has a physical basis.
Most of the hydrogen in the Universe arose shortly after the Big Bang. But many heavier elements were created later — in stars and stellar catastrophes.
The calcium in our bones, the iron in our blood, the oxygen we breathe, and the carbon that forms the basis of known life forms are linked to ancient processes of stellar evolution.
This does not mean that every atom of our body was necessarily ejected by a single supernova. The paths by which elements arise and spread are complex: they involve stars of different masses, stellar winds, supernova explosions, and mergers of compact objects.
But the main principle remains astonishing: the matter of which the human body consists passed through the history of the cosmos long before the appearance of Earth.
We listen to music about a star with the very substance that once belonged to the stars.
And then the distance between man and the Universe becomes conditional. We do not observe cosmic history from the outside — it continues in our breathing, our blood, our memory, and our capacity to hear.
Two roads to one knowledge
Science and music use different ways of knowing.
A scientific instrument measures the energy of gamma radiation, determines the direction of a signal, and tests hypotheses. Music does not replace these measurements and does not prove physical theories.
But it allows a person to experience the meaning of what has been measured.
A table can show the distribution of chemical elements. A telescope can register the radiation of a distant event. And a melody can make one feel that the destruction of a star does not necessarily mean disappearance: its matter continues its journey, changes form, and becomes part of the future.
This is precisely the value of the encounter between art and science. They do not compete and do not duplicate each other. One makes the process accessible to knowledge, the other to inner experience.
When these ways of perceiving come together, a cosmic event ceases to be merely a distant flash. It becomes a story that a person can hear within themselves.
The next sounding Cosmic Rhapsody
The American premiere of the project is scheduled for 27 July 2027 at the Hollywood Bowl. The Los Angeles Philharmonic and Jean‑Yves Thibaudet are to take part in it.
Thus, the September publications of 2026 tell not of the appearance of a new composition, but of a new stage of an already existing work: its forthcoming introduction to the American audience and the consonance discovered with COSI research.
This is precisely what makes the story especially interesting. Sometimes art does not illustrate a finished scientific discovery. It moves along its own road — and unexpectedly arrives at the same boundary that science explores from the other side.
While the Universe sounds
A supernova seems like destruction if one looks only at the disappearance of a star. But on a broader scale it is an act of transmission: what was created within it leaves its former form and gains the possibility of participating in the birth of something new.
Music is arranged the same way.
A single note arises, sounds, and disappears. But it does not vanish without a trace — it changes the next note, transforms the entire phrase, and remains in the integral movement of the work.
Perhaps that is why the story of Cosmic Rhapsody is perceived not merely as a fantasy about the cosmos. In it one recognizes the universal rhythm of transformation: the form is completed, but its content continues its journey.
A star scatters into light — and the Universe picks it up as the next note of Creation.
