For a long time, science studied music in the silence of laboratories.
A person sat alone, listened to short recordings through headphones, pressed buttons, and rated their emotions on a scale. Scientists obtained precise data — but everything that turns sound into a real musical event remained outside the laboratory doors:
the stage;
the presence of the performer;
the breath of the hall;
the silence before the first note;
and hundreds of people simultaneously entering a shared space of sound.
Now the study of music is changing.
Scientists are stepping into concert halls, combining listeners' personal experiences with physiological measurements, and trying to understand not only what a person thinks about music, but also how their body responds to it.
A concert becomes a scientific laboratory
On 26 August 2026 in the journal Scientific Reports a study was published Familiarity, Accessibility, and Taste Shape Emotional and Embodied Responses to Live Music in a Socially Diverse Audience.
The scientists observed 506 listeners during live classical and popular concerts in a professional concert hall.
This was a quasi-experimental field study: the music was played not in an artificially created laboratory setting, but where it meets a person — on stage before a live audience.
After each piece, the participants reported:
- whether they liked the music;
- whether it was familiar;
- how deeply it moved them;
- whether they felt a sense of inner touch.
At the same time, chest-worn sensors Polar H10 measured heart rate and heart rate variability — changes in the intervals between individual heartbeats, linked to the activity of the autonomic nervous system.
Thus, personal experience and physiological response met directly within the concert event.
From the listener's words — to the voice of their body
Early studies of music perception often relied primarily on the person's own responses. They were asked:
What did you feel? Did you like the piece? Did you become calmer, happier, or sadder?
Such answers are important, but they depend on memory, language, and the person's ability to recognize their own experiences.
Modern research adds another voice to the listener's account — the voice of the body.
The heart rhythm does not tell whether the music is beautiful or what personal meaning it carries. But it allows us to see: the experience did not remain only a thought — the organism truly changed its state.
The researchers found that a stronger feeling of inner touch was accompanied by an increase in the average and minimum heart rate, as well as a decrease in some indicators of parasympathetic heart rate variability.
Simply put, in moments of deep response, the body entered a state of heightened emotional arousal and attention.
The music touched the person — and the heart responded.
Kama muta — "moved by love"
The authors of the study used the concept kama muta — an expression of Sanskrit origin, which is literally translated as "moved by love".
It is difficult to convey this state in one Russian word.
It is not just joy, pleasure, or excitement. The closest is — the feeling of inner touch.
It can be felt as:
- warmth in the chest;
- a lump in the throat;
- goosebumps;
- sudden tears;
- overwhelming tenderness in the heart;
- a feeling of closeness and connection.
Kama muta arises when something unexpectedly bridges the inner distance and becomes very close.
For those who sing Sanskrit mantras, the very sound of this name may carry a special recognition. Here, sound not only conveys meaning — it becomes an experience that passes through breath, body, and heart.
Perhaps science is only now learning to measure what ancient sound practices have long allowed people to live through:
the moment when sound ceases to be merely heard — and becomes an inner touch.
Why does live music have a special power?
Music exists not only as a sequence of sounds.
It is born between performer and listener, between stage and hall, between a person's personal memory and what sounds now.
This is not just the transmission of a musical piece. It is an encounter.
In a live performance, one sees the musician's movements, feels the space of the hall, hears the breath of the instruments, and is present at the birth of a sound that will never be repeated in exactly the same way.
Music happens here and now — and the listener's body becomes part of what is happening.
Why does familiar music touch more deeply?
The study showed: more accessible and already familiar pieces generally evoked higher ratings and a stronger feeling of inner touch in listeners.
When the musical language is familiar, we follow the melody more easily, anticipate its continuation, and enter the emotional flow more freely.
A familiar composition also carries personal memory. With the first notes, people, places, and states once associated with this music may return to a person.
But recognition is not a universal key.
The strength of the response also depended on how well the genre matched the musical taste of a particular listener. One composition could deeply move one person and barely resonate with another.
This reveals an important conclusion of modern science:
music does not affect an abstract "average listener." It meets a unique person.
How music research has changed
The new study is interesting not only for its results. It shows how the scientific view of music itself is changing.
From recording to live performance
Previously, music was often presented as an isolated acoustic stimulus. Now researchers consider a concert as a holistic event in which the performer, the space, and the presence of the audience matter.
From laboratory to real life
A controlled experiment helps separate one factor from another, but it does not always preserve the living power of the musical experience.
Today, scientists go out into the natural environment—where music actually sounds.
From a homogeneous group to diverse listeners
Many studies were conducted with students or fans of a single genre. The new work involved a socially diverse audience, and each person's taste was considered a significant part of the result.
From questionnaire to multiple layers of data
Subjective feelings are now compared with physiological indicators.
Scientists see not only what a person reported after the piece, but also what was happening to their heart during the sound.
From universal effect to unique encounter
Science is gradually moving away from the simplified question: "How does music affect a person?"
A more precise question sounds different:
"What music, in what space, at what moment, and with what person does it meet?"
What exactly was measured?
The scientists did not measure love, the soul, or the depth of a musical composition.
They measured the physiological changes that accompanied the feeling of inner touch that the listeners themselves reported.
This is an important distinction.
An accelerated heart rate can occur in different states: delight, tension, surprise, recognition, or heightened attention. Therefore, a single sensor reading cannot reveal the meaning of the experience.
Moreover, the field format makes the research lively but reduces laboratory control. A person could be influenced by the music, the atmosphere of the hall, the presence of the performers, neighboring listeners, and the anticipation of the concert.
The work reveals a connection between the experience of kama muta and the physiological response, but it does not reduce the mystery of music to a heart rate. The new approach does not replace feeling with measurement.
It connects different ways of understanding a person.
When the hall becomes a single body
The study measured the hearts of individual listeners. But beyond it remains an even more astonishing question:
what happens when music touches hundreds of hearts at once?
Each person hears through their own experience, memory, and musical taste. And yet, during a live performance, many individual experiences find themselves within a single rhythm for a few minutes. Music does not erase individuality.
It creates a space where different people can simultaneously experience a feeling of inner touch—closeness to the performer, to other listeners, to their own memories, and to life itself.
Perhaps this is why a live concert cannot be completely replaced even by a flawless recording. A recording conveys the composition.
A concert creates an encounter.
The heart also listens
The science of music is becoming more precise not only because more sensitive sensors and complex analysis methods are appearing.
It is becoming more precise because it returns music to life.
To the hall. To the performer. To different people. To the body that feels before a person has time to find words.
Researchers have not yet learned to measure the mystery of music.
But now they can see the moment when an invisible touch becomes a bodily event.
Music sounds — and the heart does not just hear it. It responds. Perhaps this is exactly how the state of kama muta is born — a feeling of inner touch in which the heart begins to sing along with the music.
