Three Scientific Discoveries That Formed a Single Chord

Today is a special day.

In many cultures, July 25th is called the Day Out of Time—a symbolic pause between the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. It's a day that invites us to stop. Not to say more. But to listen more deeply.

And it's remarkable that precisely during these days, three entirely independent scientific studies, published by different teams of scientists, begin to sound like a single composition.

Each of them answers its own question. But together, they tell one story.

A story about humans.

The First Note. To Hear

In the spring of 2026, the journal Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio) published a study by an international group of researchers dedicated to one of the simplest and simultaneously most mysterious questions:

What makes music music?

Scientists asked participants from different cultures to listen to musical fragments from a wide variety of traditions, including those unfamiliar to most listeners.

The result was unexpected.

Despite differing life experiences and cultural contexts, people remarkably agreed in distinguishing music from mere sound. The authors arrived at an important conclusion.

Musicality is not determined solely by the physical characteristics of the acoustic signal.

It is born in the interaction between sound, memory, expectations, and a person's inner experience. In other words... Music begins to exist not only when it sounds.

It is born when a person hears it.

The Second Note. To Understand

Around the same time, the European research project NEUROME (Neuroplasticity and the Musical Experience), supported by the European Research Council (ERC) under the Horizon 2020 program, continues to bring together neurobiologists, psychologists, artificial intelligence specialists, and musicians.

The project leader, neurobiologist Shihab Shamma, along with his colleagues, is investigating an astonishing question:

Why is music so deeply connected to our brain activity?

Today, scientists increasingly view music not just as an art form.

It is becoming one of the best models for studying attention, memory, learning, the brain's ability to predict events, and its continuous restructuring of neural connections.

Music turns out not to be an object of study.

It becomes a language through which science begins to better understand humans themselves.

The team discovered that the brain is actively working even during pauses in music; during silence, it continues to predict the next note. Furthermore, when musicians were asked to mentally hear familiar melodies, many of the same mechanisms were activated as during actual listening.

The leader of the NEUROME project, neurobiologist Shihab Shamma, says:

“Music is universal. Every culture expresses it in its own way, but people all over the world respond to it.” These words remarkably echo the study's findings.

Despite differences in languages, traditions, and musical experience, there is something that allows a person to recognize music even when they hear it for the first time.

Perhaps this is why music remains one of the few languages capable of connecting people even before they begin to understand words.

The Third Note. To Remember

On July 21, 2026, an international group of researchers published a preprint on the bioRxiv platform dedicated to musical memory.

The scientists posed a question that everyone has experienced at least once.

Why is it sometimes enough to hear a few notes for the past to suddenly become the present?

Why does one melody disappear immediately after listening, while another stays with us for decades?

To answer this question, the researchers studied how the brain responds to different musical sequences. And they discovered a beautiful pattern.

Memory best retains not only familiar melodies. It responds just as vividly when music unexpectedly violates our expectations.
