The Sun Becomes Audible: ESA Transforms Space Data into Music

We are accustomed to observing the Universe. Now, we are learning to listen to it.

On July 16, 2026, the European Space Agency unveiled the inaugural installment of its Expedition Sound series—an extraordinary journey to our Sun, crafted around the sonification of data from the Solar Orbiter mission.

This isn't music composed about space. Rather, it represents actual scientific data translated into an audible range.

Sonification enables the conversion of numerical values and changes in observed processes into sound's pitch, loudness, timbre, and rhythm. As a result, solar flares acquire an audible form, and the spacecraft's movement transforms into a sonic trajectory of its journey.

How Solar Flares Sound

Solar Orbiter is a European Space Agency mission, developed in collaboration with NASA and launched in February 2020, designed to study the Sun from a close proximity.

The spacecraft orbits the star on an elongated elliptical path, periodically approaching it to observe processes that cannot be examined in such detail from Earth.

At the core of the Expedition Sound release is the sonification of three years of Solar Orbiter observations. Data from two instruments were utilized for this: images of the solar corona captured by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) camera, and information on X-ray emissions from solar flares recorded by the STIX telescope.

In the video, each flare is marked by a blue circle and accompanied by a metallic sound. The higher the energy of the recorded X-ray emission, the sharper the impact sound.

A low background hum conveys the distance between the spacecraft and the Sun: it intensifies as Solar Orbiter approaches the star and softens as it moves away. It feels as if we are hearing the very trajectory of the cosmic journey.

It's important to understand: this is not a literal recording of the Sun's sound. In the vacuum of space, sound does not propagate in the way we are accustomed to. The creators of sonification translate observations and measurements into audible parameters, preserving the changes and patterns contained within the data.

We are not hearing a fictional melody, but rather an alternative way of interpreting information.

A Journey to a Living Star

In the first Expedition Sound installment, Solar Orbiter mission scientist Miho Janvier discusses the nature of solar flares, the Sun's eleven-year activity cycle, and the mysteries that researchers have yet to unravel.

Klaus Nielsen from the Danish institute DTU Space, also known for his musical project Maple Pools, created the sonification. He transformed years of data into a soundscape where the Sun appears not as a static luminous disc, but as a living, dynamic system—with its own impulses, cycles, and periods of tension and energy release.

On the screen, the solar corona pulses with light. In the sound, the impacts of flares emerge. Scientific data transforms into a movement that can not only be seen but also felt.

And a distant cosmic process suddenly becomes almost tangible.

Why Science Needs Sound

Humans perceive most information about space through images, maps, numbers, and graphs. Sound introduces an additional method of exploration: it helps distinguish repetitions, changes in intensity, and temporal structures.

Sonification does not replace other scientific methods. It complements them with a new perceptual channel and helps uncover relationships that might be hidden within large datasets.

Thus, the space between science and music becomes a realm of exploration. Data retains its structure but acquires a form that can not only be understood—it can be heard.

What Has This Added to the Planet's Soundscape?

The Sun did not begin to sound on July 16, 2026. On that day, the scope of human perception expanded.

There is no conventional score in the Sun's flares. However, they possess energy, cycles, repetitions, and pauses—a profound organization of movement from which a sense of rhythm emerges.

Sonification allows us to approach the Universe not physically, but sensually. It restores sound to its ancient role—to be a guide to places where direct human experience cannot yet reach.

Our perception broadens when we begin not only to observe the Universe, but also to hear it.

And today, the music of the cosmos reminds us:

we don't merely live alongside the Sun—we are born within its rhythm, within its cycles, within its music.
