Amsterdam Empire (2025) Season 1 trailer with Russian subtitles

European crime dramas have long since stopped imitating Hollywood, and Netflix's new Dutch offering, "Amsterdam Empire," is definitive proof. This isn't a show for those hunting for cheap thrills and non-stop shootouts. What we have here is a production of an entirely different breed. It is dense, slow-burning, and leaves a lingering, potent aftertaste, much like a high-quality aged dark rum. Sharp and unfamiliar at first sip, its hidden complexities and subtle nuances only emerge once you truly begin to savor it.

At the story's core is the dark side of Amsterdam's famous cannabis culture. Don't be too quick to jump to conclusions, however: this isn't a story about street-level dealers. Jack van Dorn, played with chilling, brilliant composure by Jacob Derwig, is a true patriarch of the trade. He built "The Jackal," a massive empire of coffee shops that walks the fine line between a legal storefront and a pitch-black criminal enterprise. After all, while selling soft drugs is permitted in the Netherlands, cultivating them on an industrial scale remains a serious felony.

The intrigue explodes where it is least expected. It is not competitors or the police who begin to dismantle Jack’s empire. It is being systematically destroyed with icy fury by his own wife, Betty, played by Famke Janssen.

For Famke Janssen, this project became a personal challenge and potentially the defining performance of her career. The former model and iconic "Bond girl" has returned to her native Dutch for the first time in forty years. The resulting contrast is captivating. Her Betty is an eccentric, temperamental former pop diva in provocative attire, whom her husband has decided to discard in favor of a younger mistress. Yet, behind the mask of a woman scorned lies a brilliant tactician. Janssen, who also produced the series, personally reworked the script, insisting that the writers strip away shallow clichés. She successfully captures a character type rarely seen on screen: a woman whose destructive power is fueled not just by anger, but by the raw, bleeding ache of betrayal.

The duel between husband and wife evolves into a sophisticated chess match, where the pieces are corrupt shareholders, criminal suppliers, and their own children. Director Jonas Govaerts masterfully pits the glossy, neon-lit facade of Amsterdam against its gritty, frozen outskirts. The dialogue is biting and devoid of artificial drama, while the humor frequently borders on blunt cynicism.

Can any system survive when it is attacked by someone who knows its every hidden seam? The series avoids simplistic moralizing. Instead, it invites the audience to witness how those closest to us can become our most dangerous enemies, ready to incinerate everything built over decades. This is intelligent, aesthetically impeccable filmmaking that forces us to reflect on the nature of power and the fragility of human connections.

A Stellar Cast: Charisma in Every Frame

Famke Janssen as Betty Jonkers

Famke Janssen, recognized by millions for her roles as Jean Grey in the "X-Men" films and Miss Moneypenny in "GoldenEye," returns to her homeland after decades in Hollywood.

This marks her first role in the Dutch language, and she delivers it with breathtaking power.

Janssen does more than just act; she is the executive producer of the series, indicating her deep investment in the project.

Her Betty is far more than just a "scorned wife." She is an intelligent, dangerous, and charismatic woman prepared to burn the whole world down for the sake of justice—or revenge.
