“Play Dead” / Just Play Dead — an adventurous crime comedy with elements of melodrama and thriller. The film was released worldwide on 28 August 2026, and in several countries it hit theaters in early September.
The plot immediately promises a hilarious disaster.
Jack Wolfe decides to stage his own death to collect a huge insurance payout. His wife Nora becomes an accomplice in this scam.
But there is one problem.
Nora has her own plan.
And it is much simpler: not to stage her husband's death, but to actually kill him.
From that moment on, a real game of cat and mouse begins, where each is convinced that he or she is the cleverest.
Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green are a perfect pair for such a story
The lead roles were played by Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green.
And this is a case where the cast alone explains half the pleasure of watching.
Jackson plays a man who thinks he has devised the perfect plan. And watching this self-assured person gradually realize that the other players in the game can also think is very amusing.
Eva Green plays Nora — a woman who clearly has no intention of remaining just "the protagonist's wife."
Here she is beautiful, cold, dangerous, and utterly unpredictable.
It is precisely their interaction that gives the film that thrill: it is impossible to tell who will outwit whom first.
The film also stars Owen Macken, Maria Pedraza, Jason Fernandez, Nicole Ansari-Cox, Lee Boardman, Nikola Parvanov and others.
Funny, adventurous, and at times utterly insane
The best thing about the film is that it does not take itself too seriously.
There is crime, money, murder, an insurance scam, and a constant sense of danger.
But at the same time, everything is built with a light irony.
The characters lie to each other.
They make backup plans.
They betray.
They try to guess who has already guessed that the other has guessed.
At some point, you stop counting how many levels of deception exist here.
And you simply enjoy it.
It is also a melodrama — just a very twisted one
The relationship between Jack and Nora can hardly be called an ordinary love story.
For most couples, a conflict looks something like this:
"You forgot to take out the trash again."
Here:
"Are you really going to kill me, or are you still just thinking about it?"
And yet there is chemistry between the characters.
That is why their confrontation works not just as a criminal scam, but as a strange story of a relationship between two people who know each other too well.
And, perhaps, underestimate each other too much.
But the main thing is the ending
It is for its sake that we are ready to forgive the film almost everything.

Let's just say: at some point it seems that you already understood how it all will end.

Then it seems that now you definitely understood.
Again no.
The finale really managed to surprise.
And not just with a twist for the sake of a twist, but with how it makes you look at some events of the film anew.
It is precisely for the ending that we added two whole points to the film's score.
A rare case when the last minutes do not ruin the film, but noticeably raise its rating.

"The Big Hit" is a funny, light, and adventurous crime story with excellent actors and a very successful final twist.
Samuel L. Jackson is, as always, a pleasure.
Eva Green is magnificent.
And the story itself is crazy enough that you won't have time to get bored.
Don't expect a serious crime drama.
This is more of an elegant game: money, love, lies, murder, and the question — who in this married couple will ultimately prove to be the cleverer one?
