On 25 November 2026, the Paris branch of Bonhams will put up for auction a black Hermès Birkin 30 in Togo leather from 2009 with a handwritten inscription from Jane Birkin to her friend Georgia: "Georgia, so that you are safe, for us, your friends. Jane B (Birkin) Athens." The text was written with Jane Birkin's signature white pen, and it is precisely this touch that sets the lot apart from standard examples of the model. The estimate is 40–70 thousand euros. The lot can be examined in detail at the link https://www.bonhams.com/auction/31809/preview-lot/6216677/hermes-and-jane-birkin-2009-and-2010-sac-birkin-30-en-cuir-togo-noir-hermes-and-jane-birkin-2009-and-2010-birkin-30-bag-in-black-togo-leather/

Bonhams in London sold a black Birkin 35 in Togo leather from around 1999 that had belonged to Jane Birkin herself for 119 thousand pounds. The pre-auction estimate was 15–20 thousand, meaning the result exceeded it by roughly five times thanks to its history: in 2014 the item was donated to a charity auction in aid of Anno's Africa — a foundation named after her poet nephew — and the set included a letter from Birkin and her signature made on the inside.

At the same time, in May 2026, the same Paris department of Bonhams offered a Birkin 30 from 2024 in green Togo leather with an estimate of 15–20 thousand euros. The difference between "just a new Birkin" and "a Birkin with a documented biography" here is several times over, and the reason lies in the item's provenance, not in its qualities.

The story of the Birkin begins on a plane. Versions differ on the dates: Bonhams and the Smithsonian cite 1983 and an Air France flight, while Fashionista in one version gives 1981. Dumas was then at the head of Hermès, and Birkin complained that she could not find a bag that would fit bottles for her daughter. According to legend, the sketch was drawn on a paper sick bag. The model came out in 1984, but for a long time remained in the shadow of Chanel: according to Fashionista, real success came only in the mid-to-late 1990s, in the era of the "it-bag."

Why do a signature and an owner's markings mean so much? Hubert Felbacq, head of the fashion and accessories department at Bonhams in Paris, says that the story of Birkin's relationship with the bag bearing her name remains one of the longest-lived in fashion, and the lot offers a tangible connection to the woman who stood behind the model's image. She used them seriously, decorating them with ribbons and stickers bearing charity symbols. All five bags she received from Hermès she sold for charity. The artisanal foundation explains why collectors are willing to pay for a Birkin at all, and the personal story adds a human dimension to that foundation. It is precisely this difference that now defines the secondary market: the buyer pays not for the rarity of the leather, but for a documented connection to a specific person.
