In the Yellow River floodplain, where the river has carried silt and formed vulnerable lands for centuries, poplar plantations of varying ages act as living laboratories. A new study by Chinese scientists reveals that the understory here not only survives but changes according to its own rules, depending on the time elapsed since the trees were planted.

Scientists from Liaocheng University and other institutions surveyed plantations aged 10, 30, 40, and 50 years in the Jiucheng Forest Farm of Gaotang County, Shandong Province, as well as a control grassland plot. A total of 21 species of herbaceous plants from 9 families were recorded in the quadrats. Green bristlegrass, common reed, and Canadian horseweed were dominant.

The highest species richness—12 species—was found in the control grassland. In the plantations, the Shannon-Weaver and Simpson diversity indices initially increased and then decreased with increasing stand age. Pielou's evenness index peaked in 10-year-old plantations, and Margalef's richness index peaked in 30-year-old ones. This indicates that young and middle-aged stands create more favorable conditions for grasses than old ones.

The soil also changed noticeably. As the plantations aged, bulk density and total phosphorus content decreased, while moisture, porosity, organic carbon, available potassium, and total nitrogen increased. In 50-year-old stands, the soil became looser and richer in organic matter, but the dense canopy and high tree density limited light and space for grasses.

The key factors determining understory diversity were canopy closure, stand density, soil moisture, and organic carbon content. Correlation and multiple regression analyses confirmed their leading role: excessive shade and tree density suppress grasses, while sufficient moisture and organic matter support them.

The Yellow River floodplain is a region with a vulnerable ecology, where erosion, salinization, and soil depletion go hand in hand with the planting of protective forests. Poplars are valued here for their rapid growth and resilience, but the study reminds us that without considering the age and structure of the stands, we risk losing some of the plant diversity that helps retain soil and water.

The research results provide practical guidance for foresters: regulate planting density and monitor soil indicators to ensure the understory remains rich at all stages of stand growth.
