Scientists planned an expedition off the coast of Argentina for cold methane seeps, but instead of the expected oases of chemical life, the cameras captured something entirely different. In the South Atlantic, at depths of six hundred meters and below, the largest known reef of Bathelia candida coral was discovered—a structure approaching the size of Vatican City in area. The expedition on the vessel Falkor (too) with the SuBastian vehicle was initially looking for something else entirely, but found a whole world whose existence science had almost no inkling of.
The expedition's chief scientist, Maria Emilia Bravo from the University of Buenos Aires and CONICET, admitted that the team did not expect such a density of life in the Argentine depths. The reef stretched over more than four hundred square kilometers in terms of known clusters, although its main part occupies about 0,4 square kilometers. These cold-water corals grow slowly, live long, and create a three-dimensional architecture where dozens of species find shelter, food, and a breeding ground. It was around this reef that many of the twenty-eight candidates for new species—snails, sea urchins, anemones, and worms that have yet to be described—were concentrated.
In addition to the reef, the cameras captured the first documented whale fall in Argentine waters at a depth of nearly 3890 meters. The skeleton lying on the bottom has turned into a true oasis: sharks, crabs, and Osedax worms that feed on bones use it as a food source for decades to come. Near this "graveyard," scientists also saw the extremely rare giant phantom jellyfish Stygiomedusa gigantea—a creature with a bell up to a meter in diameter and tentacle-arms up to ten meters long, around which nimble little fish find temporary refuge.
The expedition also recorded traces of human presence: plastic bags, fishing nets, and even a VHS videotape in nearly perfect condition. Plastic that has survived for decades reached the depths before scientific cameras. This is not just random trash—it is a reminder that even the most remote corners of the planet no longer remain untouched. Biologist Melisa Fernandez Severini from the Argentine Institute of Oceanography noted that the collected samples will help in understanding not only the richness but also the vulnerability of these ecosystems.
Deep-sea coral reefs and methane seeps work as links in a vast web of life where energy comes not from the sun, but from chemical reactions or remains falling from above. When one such underwater "city" turns out to be larger than expected, it changes the perception of how little we know about 98 percent of Earth's living space. The discovery shows: what seems empty and dark may in fact be teeming with life that is easily destroyed by a single careless movement of a trawl or the dumping of waste.
The Argentine depths have now become an example of how a chance find can rewrite the biodiversity maps of an entire region. Twenty-eight potentially new species, a record reef, and the first filmed whale fall—all of this is the result of a single expedition that "missed" its target. Such discoveries make one wonder: how many more such hidden worlds are waiting for their time in places where no camera has yet descended.
Every new window into the deep-sea world serves as a reminder that protecting vulnerable habitats begins with studying them and recognizing their value to the entire planet.
