On the shores of Jersey in January 2026, after Storm Goretti, a nearly lifeless loggerhead turtle was found. She was named Crush — and that is how a story began that, seven months later, ended with her return to the warm waters of the Atlantic near the Azores.
Loggerheads (Caretta caretta) usually live in warm seas and rarely venture this far north. Powerful storms and currents knock them off course, causing "cold stunning" — a condition in which a turtle's body literally shuts down from cold and exhaustion. Crush weighed only about one and a half kilograms, was emaciated, and barely showed signs of life.
First, she was helped on the spot — at the New Era veterinary clinic in St. Saviour. Then, since the ferry could be harmful, the turtle was flown on a special flight to Southampton, and from there to the Sea Life centre in Weymouth. There she was placed in quarantine, with regular CT scans, weigh-ins, and carefully selected food. Over six months, Crush gained weight up to five kilograms and grew stronger.
In early September, along with two other rescued loggerheads — Eden and Tyree — Crush was transported to the Azores. After a short quarantine at the Porto Pim aquarium, the trio was released into the ocean. According to aquarist Victoria Goodyear, who cared for her, all three turtles "swam off beautifully into the blue," though there were many tears on the boat.
Such stories show how local rescue efforts and international cooperation can return to the wild animals that the elements have knocked out of their usual lives. Networks of sea turtle rehabilitation centres, veterinarians, and volunteers create a true "ambulance service" for the ocean.
Each successful return is a reminder that even one turtle found on a beach can tell of the fragility of marine ecosystems and that human hands can not only harm but also heal.
