In Baku, where the city streets turn into a high-speed track, Azerbaijan is introducing a temporary easing of the visa regime specifically for participants and spectators of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of 2026. From 25 August to 30 September, foreigners and stateless persons will be able to obtain a visa directly at the airports upon presenting a ticket to the race or accreditation.
The race this season will take place on Saturday, 26 September — the shift is connected with the Day of National Remembrance on 27 September. The measure, signed by President Ilham Aliyev, applies only to those travelling specifically for the event: it is enough to show an electronic or paper ticket, accreditation from Formula One Management, the FIA or Baku City Circuit. Other travellers still apply for an ASAN visa online or through consulates.
The decision reflects the country's strategy of attracting spontaneous visitors. According to the head of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, Florian Sengstschmid, Formula 1 fans often decide to go at the last moment, and a visa on arrival turns an impulsive desire into a full-fledged trip to Baku.
For the capital, where the modern Flame Towers stand alongside the ancient Icherisheher, an additional influx of spectators means not only filled grandstands but also growing demand for hotels, restaurants and excursions. After the race, fans have a few days until 30 September to explore the Caspian coast or set off for Gabala and Sheki.
At the same time, the measure remains targeted: it does not change the overall visa policy and does not apply to those who come without any connection to the race. This highlights the balance between the economic benefit of a major event and control over entry.
Ultimately, the easing of the visa regime for the Grand Prix shows how major sporting events become an instrument of a short-term tourism boom, allowing the country to respond quickly to the interests of a global audience without long-term changes to the rules.
