Thailand expands visa-free access: 15 days for Colombia, Mexico and Uzbekistan

Thailand is once again adjusting its entry rules, offering citizens of Colombia, Mexico and Uzbekistan a 15-day visa-free regime. This is not merely another relaxation, but an attempt to solve chronic visa problems for long-haul markets, where bureaucracy has often derailed trips.

Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports is preparing a proposal for the visa policy committee, which will meet on 9 November. Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul noted that Mexican and Colombian tourists regularly face delays in visa approval, causing them to lose booked flights. For Uzbeks, the procedure previously went through the embassy in Russia, which added complications.

The decision fits into a series of recent changes. From 15 September 2026, most countries moved from a 60-day visa-free stay to a 30-day one, while Mauritius and the Seychelles received 15 days. A visa on arrival is now available to only three states. Thailand seeks to maintain the flow of tourists while simultaneously controlling risks and administrative burden.

For Colombia, Mexico and Uzbekistan, 15 days is a compromise that could open the door to short trips. Travellers from Latin America will get a chance to see Bangkok's temples or Phuket's beaches without a long wait for a visa. Uzbeks will be able to plan visits more easily than before. However, the short duration will limit opportunities for a deeper acquaintance with the country.

Behind this lies an economic calculation. Thailand expects growth in the number of visitors from regions where visa barriers were previously high. At the same time, the authorities emphasise that even without a visa, a valid passport, confirmation of a return ticket and sufficient funds will be required. Such measures help balance between attracting guests and protecting against abuse.

If the proposal is approved, the effect will show within the coming months. Tourists from these countries will be able to respond more quickly to offers from airlines and tour operators. For Thailand, this is a step towards diversifying flows, where short visits from new markets will complement the usual routes from Europe and Asia.

Ultimately, Thailand is demonstrating the flexibility of its visa policy, adapting it to the specific challenges and opportunities of each destination.
