At a University of Cambridge laboratory, 33 experienced practitioners of Transcendental Meditation and an equal number of control participants lay with their eyes closed while high-density EEG recorded their brain activity. The study, published in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, relies on a neurophenomenological approach: subjective reports were collected using the Temporal Experience Tracing method alongside machine learning that reliably distinguished periods of meditation from ordinary eyes-closed rest in the same practitioners. In the control group, which performed a mental arithmetic task, the changes persisted even after the task, whereas in the TM practitioners the specific patterns disappeared immediately after the session. Neither the intensity nor the variability of pure awareness correlated with years of practice — on average 12,9 years.

These data call into question simplified notions of minimal phenomenal experience as a state of reduced neural complexity. Instead, pure awareness emerges as a dynamically rich and coordinated state in which the diversity of activity is combined with stable connectivity. Such a result bears on the neural correlates of consciousness: if a "minimal" experience requires not less but a different organization, then contrastive methods of searching for the NCC need a revision of the criteria for "full" and "partial" correlation.

The divergence from traditional emphases on alpha coherence is especially notable: linear measures of phase synchronization proved less informative than nonlinear indicators of information exchange. The study did not test causal relationships and did not include long-term observation of the transfer of effects, so its conclusions remain descriptive for a specific practice and sample. Funding from the David Lynch Foundation UK, which is linked to an organization that promotes TM, calls for caution in interpretation.
