If the Soul is essentially Light, why might a person choose to follow the path of darkness?

There is an awareness that every Soul exists in the Light. But what, then, drives the Personality to undergo the path of Darkness? Why are there so many individuals involved in spellcasting or the performance of various rites and rituals? If the Soul is Light, why would one lower their vibrations to walk the dark path? Or is this simply a game of duality?

I would not say that there are many people moving in a negative direction. There are exactly as many as are required for the collective growth of civilization. Think of it in terms of drama: the more arduous the protagonist's journey, the more significant their transformation in the finale. This is precisely why antiheroes are necessary.
The choice of a negative dynamic is the selection of an exceptionally difficult developmental trajectory, one usually undertaken only by "advanced souls" prepared to plunge into the darkness. These souls make this choice consciously, fully aware of the intense pressure they will encounter. The ultimate result for them is an acceleration of their spiritual growth. After all, they must eventually experience every ounce of pain they inflict on another being, in one capacity or another, whether in a future lifetime or in the state between lives.
From a linear perspective, the "past" lives of Buddhas and "saints" were actually immersions into negative dynamics. This is not true for all, but it applies to many. People tend to assume that such "achievements of holiness" are the result of many "virtuous" lives, yet it is more often the opposite—long periods of suffering at the bottom of negativity to gain experience in its integration. Transcending polarity requires a vast wealth of experience in living through all the extreme poles.
