Bangkok, May 19, 2026. The Thai government has announced a significant reduction in the visa-exempt stay duration for citizens of more than ninety countries, including Russia, the United States, European Union member states, and Australia. Starting today, the maximum period for remaining in the country without a visa will be thirty days, down from the previous sixty.
The decision was finalized following a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister. Officials explained the move as a necessary measure to strengthen migration controls and combat illegal employment. According to immigration authorities, the number of visa overstay cases has surged by twenty-three percent over the past two years.
Thailand's tourism industry, which welcomed over forty million international visitors in 2025, has reacted to the news with concern. The national hotel association has already petitioned the government to introduce a simplified on-site visa extension process for law-abiding tourists. Experts predict that these changes could cause tourism traffic to shift toward neighboring Southeast Asian nations.
The new regulations take effect immediately and will remain in force until the end of 2027, with the possibility of a subsequent review. Travelers are advised to check current requirements on the official Thai immigration website or at consulates before planning their journey.
