Greenland Glacier Calves, Forms New Ice Island

נערך על ידי: Tatyana Hurynovich

On August 4, 2026, a massive ice island, spanning 76.4 square kilometers, broke off the Petermann Glacier in northwestern Greenland.

This detachment represents the largest loss of floating ice for the glacier since 2012 and marks the most significant Arctic calving event since 2020.

An international research team, with the University of Ottawa playing a crucial role, documented the tabular iceberg's separation from the glacier's floating tongue.

The new island's thickness is estimated to be up to 150 meters. By 8:00 PM UTC on August 4, the iceberg had completely detached from the eastern side of the glacier.

These rare Arctic ice islands offer scientists invaluable material for studying glacier dynamics and the broader changes occurring in the region.

This is a very BIG deal, so let me break it down. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body regulating maritime transport, will vote this Friday to finalize their “net zero framework” for shipping across the board. 🚢 Beginning in 2028, all ships will need to
