Kazakhstan has successfully completed the first test flight of a passenger air taxi (eVTOL — electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) in Central Asia. These demonstration flights took place in the new smart city of Alatau near Almaty, according to Euronews.

Key Flight Details

The inaugural test flight took place on May 19, 2026, as part of a series of demonstrations conducted over several days. These trials were hosted in Alatau City, located in the Almaty region. The mission utilized a tonnage-class eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. The vehicle was developed by the Chinese company AutoFlight, with the Alatau Advance Air Group (AAAG) serving as the Kazakh partner.

Throughout the demonstration, the vehicle successfully executed vertical take-offs, maneuvers, and landings, proving the technical feasibility of air taxi operations in Kazakhstan’s environment.

Plans for Commercialization

Government officials aim to launch electric air taxi routes connecting Alatau, Almaty, and Konaev by 2027. Pending successful certification and regulatory clearance, commercial pilot operations are scheduled to begin in early 2029.

Kazakh authorities and private partners are currently working to establish a comprehensive urban air mobility ecosystem.

Context and Significance

Kazakhstan is now the first country in Central Asia to test passenger air taxis. This follows a $250 million memorandum of understanding signed with the American company Joby Aviation in November 2025 for the purchase of electric air taxis and related services.

Reports indicate that infrastructure development is already underway, including the preparation of landing pads, air traffic management systems, and a regulatory framework.

Why This Matters

The air taxi trials are a key component of Kazakhstan's broader strategy to develop advanced transportation solutions. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion in major cities—with Almaty being one of the region's most congested—while creating jobs in high-tech sectors and establishing Kazakhstan as a regional innovation hub for Central Asia.
