Parking robots at Gatwick Airport: how the automated parking of the future works

London's Gatwick Airport continues to implement innovative technologies to optimize the passenger experience. The use of robotic systems for car parking is being successfully tested and expanded within the hub. The new service offers travelers secure, fully automated, and contactless long-term parking for a small additional fee.

How does robotic parking work? The process is as simple as possible and eliminates the need to look for a free space or maneuver in tight rows. The driver pulls into a special drop-off zone (transfer box), leaves the car, collects their luggage, and heads to the terminal.

After the passenger leaves the box, a robotic platform (parking robot) moves onto the site. Using laser scanners and cameras, the robot assesses the vehicle's dimensions, gently lifts it by the wheels, and transports it to the long-term parking area. The system independently selects the optimal space and parks the car. Upon the owner's return, the robot automatically delivers the car back to the drop-off zone.

Safety and maximum efficiency. The main advantage of the technology is the incredible parking density. Since robots do not need to open doors to exit the cabin, they can place cars close to each other, leaving minimal gaps. This allows for increasing the capacity of parking zones to 50% without the need to expand the area or build new levels.

Furthermore, the human factor is completely eliminated. The risk of scratching a neighboring car when opening a door, hitting a bumper while parking, or accidentally damaging the vehicle is reduced to zero. Cars are stored in a closed, strictly controlled area, which guarantees their absolute safety and protection from theft or vandalism.

Comfort for a small additional fee. The service is positioned as a convenient addition for those going on business trips or long vacations. For a small additional fee, passengers receive premium service: a guarantee that their vehicle will be parked by a robot in a safe place, and the travel time from the parking lot to the terminal is reduced to a minimum (drop-off zones are located as close as possible to the entrances).

The implementation of such systems is part of a global trend toward the automation of airport infrastructure, which allows hubs to optimize logistics, save space, and make travel more comfortable.
