Belgian car salesman officially recognized as prince: details of the royal family's decision

Author: Tatyana Hurynovich

According to a BBC report, 26-year-old former car salesman Clément Vandenkerckhove has been officially recognized as the son of Prince Laurent, the younger brother of the current King of Belgium, Philippe. This recognition grants the young man the title of prince, but imposes a number of significant legal and financial restrictions on his status.

How the paternity recognition occurred

Clément is the illegitimate son of Prince Laurent and Belgian singer Wendy Van Wanten (real name Iris Vandenkerckhove). Their affair took place before the prince's official marriage to Princess Claire in 2003.

According to Clément, his mother revealed the secret of his origins to him only when he turned 16. At 20, he decided to contact his father on his own. After several phone conversations, a personal meeting took place, during which Prince Laurent himself suggested taking a DNA test to establish biological kinship. The results of the genetic examination confirmed paternity with a probability of 99,5%. The ceremony accepting Clément into the family took place a few months ago, but the details have only now become known to the general public.

Legal status and restrictions

Despite receiving the title, Clément Vandenkerckhove's status differs radically from that of children born in lawful wedlock (Princess Louise and Princes Aymeric and Nicolas). According to the terms of the recognition:

  • He will not receive the financial support due to official members of the Belgian royal family.
  • He is excluded from the line of succession to the throne.
  • He is not required to participate in the monarchy's traditional ceremonial events.

In effect, the title is of a confirmed biological nature but does not integrate the young man into the institution of the monarchy with its state privileges and duties.

Personal position and historical parallels

Clément himself stated that he has not yet made a final decision about changing his surname to the royal one (Saxe-Coburg). In an interview with the publication Het Nieuwsblad he emphasized that he is proud of the Vandenkerckhove surname and believes that by giving it up, he would betray everything his mother did for him.

This case has notable historical parallels within the Belgian monarchy itself. Prince Laurent's father, former King Albert II of Belgium, also acknowledged his paternity of an illegitimate daughter, Delphine Boël, in 2020. However, unlike the current case, Albert II's recognition occurred only after a lengthy legal battle and the completion of a mandatory DNA test under the threat of heavy daily fines. The process with Prince Laurent took place voluntarily and without judicial intervention.
