The Sift: a new door into the unknown. Minecraft announced a new dimension at Minecraft Live

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In the world of Minecraft, there are rare moments capable of stopping time. Not an update with new blocks, not a cute mob, and not even a big balance patch. But a true change to the very fabric of the universe. On 26 September 2026, at Minecraft Live, exactly that happened. For the first time in fourteen years, Mojang opened a new dimension.

Its name is — The Sift.

This is not just another biome. This is the fourth reality. After the Overworld, the Nether, and the End — a space that previously existed only in the imagination of players and in the boldest fan mods. Now it officially enters the canon.

The silence that lasted fourteen years

When the End appeared in 2011, many thought three worlds were enough. The Nether was hell, the End was the final point. Between them stretched a vast, almost infinite Overworld. It seemed the architecture of Minecraft was already complete. Years passed. The game grew, changed, became more complex and more beautiful, but the borders of its universe remained the same. Until one day on the Minecraft Live stage, words were spoken that fans had awaited so long they had almost stopped believing.

"Next year you will be able to enter The Sift in vanilla Minecraft. This is the first new dimension in more than fourteen years."

The hall froze. And then it exploded.

What it will be like

Mojang describe The Sift sparingly, but very precisely: beautiful, bright, and "teeming with souls." This is not hell and not emptiness. This is a place where, it seems, the very fabric of reality has become thinner. Where colors are richer, the air is thicker, and space itself seems to breathe.

From what has already been shown, a strange and alluring image takes shape. Pink grass. Stones in warm red-orange hues. Green, almost glowing vegetation. Elements reminiscent of sculk, but more alive and softer. A dangerous liquid called icor, which gleams like liquid mercury and clearly does not forgive carelessness. There are zones with poetic names — Meadow and Carapace. A meadow and a shell. One sounds gentle, the other — armored, protective, perhaps ancient.

In The Sift, apparently, you can jump higher. There are hints of new physics rules. There are creatures currently called companions and threats at the same time. Bluish rabbit-like beings, strange singers, those called Sifters. All of this so far exists mainly in Minecraft Dungeons II, where the dimension appeared earlier. But it is already clear: when The Sift comes to the main game in 2027, it will change not only the map, but the feeling of the world.

Not just content. A new language

The addition of a new dimension is always more than new content. The Nether once taught us that resources can be dangerous. The End showed that a story can have an ending, and then — a new beginning. The Sift, it seems, wants to teach something different.

In its description, the word "souls" is constantly heard. Not in a religious sense. Rather in the sense of presence. Here everything seems filled with life, even if that life is strange, fluid, not always understandable. Perhaps this is a place where the player will have to not so much fight as listen closely. Where exploration will be more important than mining, and atmosphere — more important than progress.

That is precisely why the announcement provoked such a strong response. Not because "finally, a new dimension." But because after so many years, Minecraft once again allowed itself a mystery. Once again left space for imagination. Once again reminded us that this world can still surprise.

What awaits players

So far there are few details. And this, perhaps, is the best thing that could have happened. Mojang deliberately do not tell how exactly to open the portal to The Sift. They do not show the full list of blocks and mobs. They do not explain what new mechanics will appear. They give only a glimpse — and leave the rest for later.

First, The Sift can be felt in Minecraft Dungeons II. There it already exists as a full-fledged space with its own zones, dangers, and beauty. And in 2027, that beauty will move into the main game. And then millions of players will step for the first time into a world that no one has yet fully explored.

Will there be new ores there? New structures? New bosses? A new way to travel between dimensions? For now, no one knows. And there is a special charm in that not knowing.

The end of one era and the beginning of another

Minecraft lived for a long time within the framework of three worlds. They became like home. We knew how the Nether sounds, how the End smells, how a sunset looks in the Overworld. The Sift destroys that familiarity. It says: everything can be different. Colors can be different. The rules — gentler or harsher. Danger — more beautiful. And the soul of the world — closer than it seemed.

This is not just an update. This is an invitation. To step into the unknown. To feel the ground appearing beneath your feet again, ground that was not there before. To hear space answering you in a new way.

The Sift is not yet fully open. But the door already exists. And behind it — something very important.

Not just a new dimension.

A new chapter.
