Prince William makes his first appearance on the Graham Norton sofa: the family's favourite show and childhood dreams

On Thursday, 22 October 2026, astonished applause broke out in the BBC Studioworks 6 studio on Wood Lane: Prince William unexpectedly walked out onto the red sofa of The Graham Norton Show. None of the guests — Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham and Robert Irwin — had expected such a turn. It was the first time in history that a member of the royal family had appeared on the air of the popular British talk show.

The appearance was timed to a special edition devoted to the Earthshot Prize, which the prince founded in 2020. William explained why he had grown tired of the "negativity and doom" in environmental news and had decided to focus on optimism and concrete solutions. But the conversation quickly turned personal: the host asked about his favourite series.

"I love it, the whole family loves it," replied the Prince of Wales. "Charlotte and Louis are simply obsessed. It really is good television." He was talking about the reality show The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One, hosted by Claudia Winkleman. William even admitted that after the first episode he had met the contestant Ross Kemp and could not resist a joke — he cautiously "touched" him to check his reaction.

The prince also spoke about his childhood dreams: as a young man he wanted to become a police officer, and later a DJ, though he admits he was "not very good" at it. Today he relaxes by watching films and listening to music, and he especially values the work of Christopher Nolan — he called The Dark Knight psychologically deep and gripping.

William's appearance on Norton's sofa is no accident. A few days before the broadcast he announced a children's version of the Earthshot Prize, and in November a ceremony is due to take place in Mumbai. At a moment when the monarchy is increasingly discussed in the context of tradition and distance, such a step looks like a deliberate gesture of drawing closer to the audience, especially the young.

For the 44-year-old heir, whose family often remains behind closed doors, the mention of how they all watch a reality show together adds unexpected warmth. It is not just entertainment — it is a rare glimpse of how the Prince of Wales tries to remain human against the backdrop of royal duties.

The episode will air on BBC One on the evening of 23 October, and it is already clear: the story of the "obsessed" Charlotte and Louis will be remembered no less than the historic appearance on the red sofa itself.
