When Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones appeared together at the end of the 1990s, Hollywood very quickly found a topic for discussion: there is exactly a 25-year age gap between them.
For the tabloids, this was enough to wonder how long the romance would last. A quarter of a century later, the answer is already known.
On 18 November 2025, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones celebrated their silver anniversary — 25 years of marriage. And, perhaps, the most interesting thing about their story is not that they managed to prove the skeptics wrong. But that their union was never a perfect Hollywood fairy tale — and they never hid that fact themselves.
It all started with one meeting
They met in 1998 at the Deauville American Film Festival in France. Douglas had already seen Zeta-Jones in "The Mask of Zorro" and wanted to meet her; they were introduced to each other by Danny DeVito.
The story did not develop instantly. Later, Catherine recalled months of phone calls, flowers, meetings, and dinners. At the end of 1999, they got engaged, and on 18 November 2000 they got married at the Plaza Hotel in New York. Already on 8 August 2000, the couple had a son, Dylan Michael. On 20 April 2003 their daughter, Carys Zeta Douglas, was born. The name means "love" in Welsh — a tribute to Catherine's homeland, Wales
The BBC called this event the "wedding of the year"
The ceremony, which cost $2 million, was attended only by their closest friends: Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, and Brad Pitt
It seemed their fate was sealed — to be together forever.
The wedding turned out to be anything but intimate. In 2025, Zeta-Jones recounted that the celebration unexpectedly stretched for more than 12 hours: guests continued to sing and socialize by the piano until the early morning. It was only around half past six that the newlyweds discovered the pianist had gone home long ago.
After 25 years, this story sounds almost symbolic: the party turned out to be much longer than planned. The marriage, too.
"They said it wouldn't last"
The age gap accompanied their relationship from the very beginning. Douglas said that the constant media attention to this topic was particularly hurtful to him because of Catherine. She herself later learned to treat it with humor.
On the eve of their 25th wedding anniversary, the actress joked: “And they said it wouldn't last”. At the same time, she did not try to present their life together as an endless honeymoon. According to her, ups and downs are inevitable in any real relationship, while love and respect remained constant for them.
And they did have a downturn — a very serious one.
2010: Cancer and a scandalous admission
In 2010, Michael Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer (he later clarified that it was tongue cancer). The treatment was difficult: doctors warned that he might lose part of his tongue and jaw.
But a real scandal erupted when Douglas stated that the disease was caused by HPV, which he had contracted through oral sex. He later bitterly regretted it: “It was one of those... I was so sorry for the embarrassment it caused Catherine and her family”
It is important to note: Michael clarified that the infection occurred before his marriage to Catherine, but it was too late — the damage to the family's reputation had been done
2011: Catherine's bipolar disorder
The following year, a blow came from another direction. Catherine Zeta-Jones admitted that she suffered from bipolar II disorder and voluntarily checked into a clinic for treatment.
The stress of her husband's illness, constant public attacks, and the pressure of fame led to a crisis. Michael told Oprah Winfrey that Catherine had been “outed” at the clinic: “She had planned to keep the diagnosis private, but another patient blabbed to the press”
Catherine later admitted: “If my revelation about bipolar disorder has encouraged one person to seek help, then it was worth it. There is no need to suffer in silence”
Years when there was no time for red carpets
The beginning of the 2010s was a difficult period for the family. Michael Douglas was undergoing treatment for cancer, and Catherine Zeta-Jones was publicly discussing her own health issues and treatment for bipolar disorder. At the same time, the family was going through other difficulties.
In August 2013, the couple announced that they were spending some time apart. This was, perhaps, the most notable crisis during their years of marriage.
But a final divorce did not follow.
Soon after, Douglas said that they were trying to work things out, and within the following year, the couple reunited. They have remained together ever since.
It is precisely this chapter that makes their story more interesting than the typical tale of "eternal celebrity love."
They separated. They fell ill. They were angry. They went through periods when their careers, health, and family all demanded too much at once.
And then they decided to continue.
The secret turned out to be quite un-Hollywood
Catherine Zeta-Jones explained the longevity of their marriage using formulas that were anything but romantic.
Love. Respect. Personal space. And a sense of humor.
In interviews, she said that they respect each other's space, have never lost the ability to laugh together, and still enjoy each other's company.
Douglas phrased a similar thought a bit differently: people often show more patience and kindness to strangers than to the person they are with every day. One of his lessons in family life was precisely the need not to forget to treat your closest person well.
Perhaps there is much more truth about a 25-year marriage in these words than in any beautiful wedding vow.
Their greatest achievement turned out to be their family
Michael and Catherine have two children together — Dylan and Carys. Douglas also has an older son, Cameron, from his first marriage.
Before their silver wedding anniversary, Zeta-Jones said that she considers their children to be one of the greatest achievements of their life together. When Dylan and Carys grew up and started their own independent lives, the couple entered a new stage — living as a pair once again.
And it currently looks nothing like the round-the-clock existence of a Hollywood couple on the red carpet.
In 2026, Catherine shared that for many years they had built their life primarily on the East Coast of the US, rather than within the Hollywood scene of Los Angeles. She even wondered if this had sometimes harmed her career, because she never engaged in constant "networking" in Hollywood.
It turns out to be quite a curious paradox: one of the world's most famous acting couples has preserved their relationship, in part by trying not to turn their entire life into Hollywood.
A silver wedding without a victory speech
On their 25th anniversary, Zeta-Jones posted photographs of their wedding and life together.
She recalled the scent of the flowers, the candlelight, the Welsh choir, and Michael waiting for her at the end of the aisle. And then she wrote that she loves him today just as much as she did then.
It is beautiful — but these words work especially well precisely because they are not backed by 25 years of perfect retouching.
There was the birth of their children and Oscars, premieres and travels.
But there was also illness.
There was separation.
There was a time when their marriage could very well have ended.
There were years when the age gap, which everyone once talked about, proved to be a much less serious trial than real life.
And yet, in November 2025, they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary together.
Perhaps that is exactly why the story of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones looks more appealing today than it did at the moment of their lavish wedding at the Plaza.
Back then, it was the story of two stars whom many doubted.
Now, it is the story of two people who have managed to see each other successful and tired, healthy and ill, close and distant.
And yet, they remained together.
Not because nothing changed over 25 years.
But, perhaps, because almost everything changed — except for the desire to choose each other again.
