The giant tortoise Jonathan from the island of Saint Helena is officially considered the oldest known living land animal.
He is 194 years old.
And now scientists have decided to study his DNA closely to understand why Jonathan's body manages to remain viable for so long.
Researchers are especially interested in the mechanisms of cellular aging, tissue repair and energy metabolism.
So just imagine:
you are 194 years old,
you live calmly on an island,
you are in no hurry,
you eat,
you stroll,
you watch people who change from generation to generation,
and then scientists come to you and say:
"Could we please find out what your secret is?"
And they take samples. π
Jonathan himself, it seems, continues to follow his own research programme:
less fuss, more leaves.
Perhaps that is exactly why people have not yet found the formula for longevity.
They run around too much.
