In the vicinity of Beijing, traces previously found only in remote mountainous areas are increasingly being spotted: paw prints of leopards and their smaller relative, the leopard cat. The city, known for its skyscrapers and dense development, is gradually transforming into a place where rare species not only pass through but stay for permanent residence.
Not long ago, Beijing served only as a temporary stop for migratory birds. Now, observational data shows that many species are switching to a sedentary lifestyle. The reason, apparently, lies in systematic efforts to restore green corridors, create nature reserves, and reduce pollution. Leopards and leopard cats find enough food and shelter here not to migrate further.
Such changes reflect a broader pattern: urbanized areas, with the right approach, can become allies of biodiversity, not enemies. Humans, by limiting their intervention in certain zones, inadvertently create conditions in which nature begins to return. This is not accidental, but the result of consistent work on greening and conservation.
The example of leopard cats is particularly telling—small, secretive predators whose presence serves as an indicator of ecosystem health. Their appearance near the capital indicates that small mammals and birds are also finding suitable conditions here. Thus, the cycle of life is completed: predators control rodent populations, and they, in turn, affect vegetation.
Such processes are reminiscent of how an old garden gradually becomes overgrown with wild plants if it is no longer constantly mowed. The urban environment, once perceived as hostile, begins to support complex ecological connections. This is not a return to pristine wilderness, but a new form of coexistence where the boundaries between humans and the animal world become permeable.
