In the Yunkai Mountain Nature Reserve in Guangdong Province, a leopard cat has been recorded once again — a rare representative of the fauna whose appearance speaks of the gradual recovery of the local forests. An infrared camera captured the graceful predator among shrubs and fallen leaves, and this is already the second confirmation in recent years.
The leopard cat, or Prionailurus bengalensis, is an animal of China's second category of state protection. It resembles a domestic cat but is more slender, with spotted fur reminiscent of old coins. The little beast is nocturnal, climbs and swims deftly, and hunts small rodents, birds and amphibians. In 2021 it was included in the updated list of specially protected species, and according to the Chinese Red Book it is classified as vulnerable.
The footage was taken on 26 July at around four in the morning. The camera showed the cat moving confidently up a slope, displaying excellent camouflage and caution. Five years have passed since 2021, and the new encounter confirms that the reserve has enough food and shelter. The ecosystem of Yunkai Mountain evidently maintains a balance in which every element — from insects to large predators — plays its part.
Such finds are important not only for scientists. They show that forest protection measures are bearing fruit: reduced poaching, logging controls and monitoring are allowing rare species to return. Here the leopard cat serves as a kind of indicator of the forest's health, much as clean water in a river speaks of the well-being of the entire valley.
For local residents and visitors to the reserve, this is one more reason to value the nature around them. Observing wildlife reminds us that even small efforts to preserve habitats help preserve entire chains of life. In the long term, such signals strengthen confidence that Chinese nature reserves are capable of sustaining biodiversity even in densely populated regions.
The appearance of the leopard cat in Yunkai Mountain is yet another proof that thoughtful nature conservation brings visible results and is worth continuing.
