In African savannas, animals are no longer just victims: they are becoming living alarm systems, whose sudden movements and bursts of activity are detected by the new satellite system Icarus. Recently launched, it allows tracking the behavior of thousands of animals from space and, possibly, helps combat poaching in real time.
The essence of the project lies in tiny sensors attached to the ears or necks of animals. These tags record GPS coordinates, heart rate, body temperature, and even atmospheric pressure. The data is transmitted to Icarus satellites, forming a kind of "internet of animals." According to the researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, by the year 2030, it is planned to equip about one hundred thousand individuals worldwide with tags.
The use of "panic patterns" looks especially promising. In the Okambara Reserve in Namibia, scientists simulated the appearance of poachers: animals — zebras, antelopes, wildebeests — scattered abruptly, leaving characteristic traces on maps. Algorithms are learning to recognize such bursts and distinguish them from normal behavior. Giraffes, which stay in place and turn their heads toward the threat, may indicate the direction from which people came.
In Kruger National Park in South Africa, the system has already helped free dozens of wild dogs from poacher snares. When tags detect an anomaly — for example, the immobility of two ear sensors simultaneously — an alarm signal is sent. Rangers get a chance to intervene before the animal dies. Similar approaches are being tested to protect rhinos, whose population in the region remains under constant pressure.
The technology overcomes previous limitations: old collars weighed tens of kilograms and were only suitable for large ungulates. Modern sensors the size of a rice grain operate on supercapacitors and transmit compressed data even from hard-to-reach places. However, the full global network is still being formed, and real-time accuracy depends on the density of receiver coverage on the ground.
Thus, Icarus turns wildlife into a distributed early warning system, where the behavior of some species helps protect others. This is not just surveillance, but a new way to see interconnections in the ecosystem and respond to threats in time.
