An Alligator in the Bagel Shop: An Unexpected Guest from the Swamps of North Carolina

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In the quiet coastal town of Southport, North Carolina, an ordinary day at the Bagel Dock Express bagel shop suddenly turned into an unusual encounter. A three-foot alligator confidently walked through the open back door, passed the stockroom and the kitchen, and ended up behind the counter, as if waiting for an order. Surveillance cameras captured this "visit," which owner Jesse Driscoll described as something utterly unimaginable for a bagel shop.

Employees and customers were stunned: one of them even grabbed a chair, preparing to defend himself. However, the incident ended peacefully — the Southport police, together with animal protection officers, safely removed the reptile and relocated it to its natural habitat. It was probably an American alligator, a species under federal protection.

Such encounters in the coastal areas of North Carolina are becoming increasingly frequent. The state Wildlife Resources Commission notes a rise in calls during alligator mating season, when the animals move about more actively. The cause often lies in human behavior: feeding wild animals leads them to lose their natural caution and begin to associate people with a food source.

In response to this trend, the authorities launched the GatorWise program — a set of recommendations for residents and tourists. Among them: never feed alligators, do not leave food waste in the water, and do not approach them or attempt to interact with them. These simple rules help reduce the risk of conflicts and preserve the balance in coastal ecosystems.

The incident at the bagel shop is a vivid example of how urbanization and the expansion of human activity encroach upon familiar habitats. The swampy areas of North Carolina remain home to alligators, and such "invasions" remind us: nature does not disappear, it merely adapts to living alongside us.

The shop owner reacted with humor, writing on social media that the fame of the fresh bagels had evidently reached the swamps as well. Such stories, though they bring a smile, underscore the importance of mindful coexistence with wildlife.

The safe removal of the animal without harm to it or to people became possible thanks to the coordinated work of the services. This shows that with the right approach, conflicts can be resolved humanely and effectively.

Ultimately, such episodes teach us to respect the boundaries of wildlife and to take precautions in areas where alligators have lived since time immemorial.
