The eternal debate between dog and cat people often boils down to one argument: dogs love us unconditionally, while cats love us only because we feed them. Cats have long been perceived as independent, selfish, and emotionally cold creatures.
However, over the past decade, felinology (the science of cats) and cognitive animal psychology have made significant breakthroughs. Modern scientific research irrefutably proves that cats love their owners. Their love simply manifests differently than a dog's.
1. Attachment Theory: Cats Love Us Like Children and Dogs Do.
The most compelling evidence of feline affection was obtained in 2019 by researchers from Oregon State University, led by Kristyn Vitale (Current Biology, September 2019).
The scientists adapted the classic "Strange Situation Test," originally developed to assess the attachment of human infants. Cats were placed in an unfamiliar room with their owner, then the owner left, leaving the pet alone, and then returned. 64.3% of kittens and 65.8% of adult cats demonstrated "secure attachment." Under stress, they used their owner as a "secure base" – seeking comfort from them, then calming down and returning to explore the room.
For comparison, this figure is about 65% for dogs and 65% for human infants. The remaining 35% of cats showed "insecure attachment" (either clinging too tightly to their owner or completely ignoring them), which, as in humans, is often a consequence of improper early socialization or stress.
This means your cat doesn't just see you as a "can opener." You are a source of safety and emotional comfort for them.
2. The Chemistry of Love: Oxytocin and Cortisol
Love at a biochemical level involves the release of oxytocin (the "hormone of attachment and trust") and a decrease in cortisol (the "stress hormone").
For a long time, it was believed that cats were incapable of an oxytocin response. But studies involving saliva and urine samples from cats before and after interacting with their owners have disproven this. Oxytocin levels in cats significantly increased after petting and playing with their favorite person.
Scientists note an important detail: in dogs, the oxytocin release upon contact with the owner is explosive; they were evolutionarily bred for close cooperation with humans. In cats, this surge is more restrained, but it exists. Furthermore, the owner's presence reliably reduces a cat's cortisol levels in stressful situations, such as car rides or vet visits.
3. The Language of Cat Love: Behavioral Signs
Cats can't smile or wag their tails like dogs. Their language of love is subtler and requires interpretation. Science confirms that the following actions are not mere reflexes but acts of love and trust:
The "Cat Kiss" (Slow Blink). A 2020 study from the University of Sussex proved that when a cat slowly closes its eyes while looking at you, it expresses positive emotions and trust. Moreover, if you slow-blink back, the cat is more likely to blink back at you and approach you. This is a direct equivalent of a human smile.
"Making Biscuits" (Kneading). When a cat kneads you with its paws, it reverts to a kitten state, massaging its mother's belly to stimulate milk flow. By doing this to you, the cat subconsciously transfers the role of a nurturing mother onto you. This is the highest form of trust.
Sleeping on or near you. In the wild, sleep is the most vulnerable state. If a cat sleeps on your lap or at your feet, it is literally saying, "I know you won't betray me and will protect me."
