An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4,9 struck eastern Japan, including Tokyo. The tremors began around 4:45 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometers. The maximum intensity on the seven-point scale reached 4 in some areas of Ibaraki and neighboring Saitama.

In Tokyo itself and in twelve other prefectures — from Miyagi to Shizuoka — the intensity ranged from 1 to 3. Residents felt noticeable shaking, but no serious consequences have been recorded.

The agency immediately confirmed: there is no tsunami threat. Japan Atomic Power Co. reported no abnormalities at the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant in Ibaraki.

How often do such underground tremors remind residents of the region of the need to be prepared for nature's surprises?

As of publication, there have been no reports of casualties or damage. Seismic activity in this part of Japan remains commonplace, and local services continue to monitor the situation.
